Do you happen to have the names of Thomas parents or where he was born about Katie?

Hello Katie
You probably know that there will not be a birth certificate as such, only a record of his birth or baptism in the OPR's (Old Parish Register).
Have you found Thomas on any census?
The 1851 census should tell you what district he was born in and also his age (but not always reliable), this should help narrow the search for his birth on IGI.
If he died after 1855 you should be able to search for his death certificate on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

Hello Katie
Thomas Cockburn and Elspeth Kay had a daughter Margaret born in Scoonie 31/7/1841.
First check the 1841 census for that area (hopefully this is not one of the missing Fife districts).
You wont find out much from the 1841 but you should find out Thomas's occupation and where the family were living.
the 1851 census will give you more details if they are still living in the same area (age and birth district).
Seeing that Thomas and Elspeth married in 1820 and had their last child Margaret born in 1841, I would think that they were born c1800.
You will find an Elspeth Cockburn aged 61 on the 1861 census in Largo Fife http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
There is also a death record for an Elspeth Cockburn (but not Kay) died in Largo Fife in 1866 age 66
It may be worth spending some credits to check these out?
good luck
Jim

The 1841 census for Scoonie is actually online so if you go to http://member.melbpc.org.au/~andes/scoonie6.html you'll find Thomas and his family on page 12.
