Hi Autumnsrose
I found a mention of Kilgarven, County Kerry on the web - could this maybe be it? My Irish knowledge is scant - I'm sure someone will be able to give you other, probably better, suggestions. :D

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Kathie from Minnesota

First let me welcome you to the board. 8) Next let me thank you for all the cold weather and snow you've been sending my way  Yup...it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas :D

Ok...now for about your question. There is a nifty website for searching for placenames in Ireland called

seanruad.com

but with the spelling you gave there are no returns. The closest I've found so far is a Killygarvan which was in County Tyrone. I'm away from my home computer at the moment but will check my atlas later to see if that contains any other places in Ireland with same or similar spellings. There are several Kilgarvan locations!

Hope this helps

Best wishes

Hi Kathie, As well as the places names suggested by Jean and Lesley, there is a Parish and Townland in Donegal called Killygarvan. There is also a large Friel (sp) population in this area if this is any use to you.

Thank you for the welcome JustJean! LOL at the cold and snow you're getting!
A big Thank You to everyone else!
Ian, I have no idea if the last name of "Friel" is the correct one because in almost every record of my family, the spelling of the last name seems to change.
John "Freel" married Catherine Logan on Nov. 21, 1857 in Innerwick, East Lothian.
Their first son was born James "Freeland" on Feb. 4, 1859 in Dunbar, Haddington, East Lothian.
Daughter Catherine was born Catherine "Freelint" on Sept. 3, 1860 in Eyemouth, Berwick.
It was on Catherine's birth record that the town of "Killegarvan" was written under her father John's name.
There was also another son, Hugh born about 1866, but I have not been able to find his birth record.
However, Hugh kept the surname of "Freeland" when he married and died.
James changed the spelling to "Frail" in the 1890s.
When John died, his last name was spelled "Friel".
Needless to say, this has not been an easy family to research.

This link should take you to Survey Book 663, Ward 18, where I came across a reference to a Mrs Friel living at 22 Lime St, Glasgow, on line 85, in 1913/14. Dunno if it helps, but it might be worth pursuing. As a surname, Friel doesn't exactly enjoy the same height of popularity as Smith does....

....Guess who's just discovered yet another relative named Smith??? :D
