Gretna Marriage.....

Post by Scozzie » Tue Dec 13, 2005 3:21 am

I have a birth entry which shows the child's parents' marriage on 3 November 1877 Gretna. I can't find the entry for the marriage on SP. So... if this couple were married by the Blacksmith at Gretna Green, does this mean those marriages weren't recorded?

Scozzie

See the various threads here when you search for "Irregular AND Marriage" to understand that this could well have been a perfectly legal marriage in the eyes of Scots Law (although greatly frowned on and disapproved of by the Church of Scotland).

By means of the Sheriff's Warrant and other similar procedures some couples, but far from all, went on to have the marriage entered in the statutory Register of Marriages.

If you dig deep on the GROS site, you'll find a listing of who holds records of Gretna and other similar marriages. If I can find it easily, I'll add it here later.

My humble apologies to GROS, - it's now much easier to find http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/h ... unmar.html

Thanks David, you're a gem. I'll go look (and probably find lots of my other irregular rellies!).
