You've probably already got them on the 1851 census, but if not you'll find them at http://www.dumgal.gov.uk/historicalindexes/census.aspx

Hi Ted,
Keep a very open mind on the spelling of any name!
This may be your family - from the LDS site http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/default.asp
But i usually use their IGI search page;
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... _form=true
==
WILLIAM COPLAND
JANNET CARNOCHAN / JANET CAIRNOCHAN
Marriage: 18 DEC 1828 Kirkgunzeon, Kirkcudbright, Scotland [LDS Submission]
Marriage: 18 DEC 1829 Kirkgunzeon, Kirkcudbright, Scotland [LDS Submission]

Some children [all OPR extracts from the IGI]
There may be more between 1830-1844; i think the IGI has only the female births for Kirkgunzeon.

MARY COPLAND - Christening: 22 SEP 1830 Kirkgunzeon, Kirkcudbright, Scotland
JANET COPLAND - Christening: 17 MAR 1844 Kirkgunzeon, Kirkcudbright, Scotland
MARGARET COPLAND - Christening: 08 FEB 1846 Kirkgunzeon, Kirkcudbright, Scotland
MARGARET COPLAND - Christening: 30 DEC 1849 Kirkgunzeon, Kirkcudbright, Scotland

Beattie v Copland

Post by Baldy » Wed Dec 21, 2005 10:34 am

Hi Jack.
Thanks for that.
I have been working with an open mind (the wife tells me that what it is all the time ) I was originally looking at the spelling Copeland & Coupland, then fo some reason I decided that it may have been spelt Copland, this is where I managed to gather a "little" information on the family.
I believe that the only correct way to get the spelling "maybe" from a birth certificate,& or a marriage certificate but, then again I have been proved wrong before.

I think that you may have the correct mob for me,as the information that I have is that Janet was born c1844 in Kirkgunzeon,Kbt,I have not been able to find any other around that date.

Again many thanks for that info.
Have a Happy Xmas

Hi Ted,
One wee snag on what i'd sent is the 1881 census that Andy found.

Elizabeth COPLAND W 65 F Kirkmichael, Dumfries, Scotland
Rel: Moth In Law

IF Janet b1844 is correct, then her mother should've also been Janet.... Elizabeth may just be an error.
What does the 1864 MC say for her parents?

Hi Jack.
As yet I have not got the Marriage Certificate, the information on their marriage is 2nd hand to me. Here is what I have so far received :-
Robert Beattie,born 17 Oct 1838 in Troqueer.Kbt.
Married 31 May 1864 to Janet Copland in Troqueer,Kbt.
Robert died 10 August 1912 at Lotus Cottage-New Abbey (aged 78)

The Janet in question was born c 1844,& in your transmission it gives the date of 17 March 1844,this all ties in to the research that I have.

I have no other information on either of them at this stage.

I am restarting my research of the Beattie family after a looong lay off.

Regards

Beattie/Coupland

Post by isobelc » Thu Dec 22, 2005 1:38 pm

Dear Ted,

I checked the marriage certificate for you.

Robert and Janet married on 31st May 1864 at High Street, Maxwelltown,Troqueer.
Robert was 25, a Farm Servant, single, of Mill Hill Troqueer
Father William Beattie, Farm servant
Mother Janet Beattie m/s Callender

This family are listed at Barrand, Kirkbean in 1851
William Beattie age 40 Head, Ploughman, born kirkbean
Janet age 40, wife born Penpont
Mary age 14 daughter born Troqueer
Robert age 12 son born Troqueer
Janet age 10 daughter born Troqueer
Clarence age 3 son born Kirkbean
Thomas 1month son born Kirkbean
Robert Callendar age 75, father in law, born Irongray

William married Janet on 28th February 1832 at Holywood Dumfries. The igi shows the baptism of Robert as 28th October 1838 at Troqueer, but this is an LDS submission, so don't know where this information came from.

Janet Coupland was 21, single, and also a Farm Servant at Mill Hill.
Her parents were John Coupland, Labourer and Elizabeth Coupland m/s Easton.

This family were living at 14 Old Bridge Street, Maxwelltown in 1851 -
John Coupland age 37 Head, Labourer, born Kirkgunzeon Kirkcudbright
Elizabeth age 36, wife, born Kirkmichael
David age 11, son, born Kirkgunzeon
Jannet age 9, daughter born Kirkgunzeon
Thomas age 6, son born Lochrutton
Robert age 4,son, born Lochrutton

There is no marriage that I can see for this couple and the only child I can find is a Margaret Ireland Coupland, born in 1849 in Troqueer. There is no sign of her in 1851, so maybe she died young. Her middle name is of interest as there is an igi entry (Submitted) for a John Caupland son of David Caupland and Susanna Ireland born 6/12/1813 at Balmaghie, Kirkcudbright.

As both Robert and Janets' parents are shown as still living in 1864, it should be possible to find all their death certs. on SP and get back another generation. This would prove or disprove the David /Susanna Ireland link. As you know that Elizabeth Coupland(Easton) was still alive in 1881 this should narrow down your search area for her death.

Hi Isobel,
Thanks for getting all the details - i was at Park Circus today at short notice and had a quick look at the 1864 MC too!
So Ted, if Robert & Janet who married 1864 are "yours" then you can dismiss all the OPRs i posted.
But as you say Isobel, both sets of parents aren't listed as deceased, so hopefully their parents will be shown on their DCs.
