Devine origins?.....
My great grandfather, Thomas Devine, married Lucy Niemann in 1858, in Sandhurst (now Bendigo), Australia. He was a plumber, and came, allegedly, from Glasgow. His mother's name was Matilda Tomlinson, but his father's first name is illegible on the only document we have. Haven't found anything yet on Ancestry.com or Genuki. Would anyone out there have any knowledge of these Glasgow Devines or Tomlinsons in the 1840s or early 50s?

Hello, and welcome to TalkingScot. I checked the LDS site and the only one that might even be remotely right for Thomas was a birth on October 23, 1833 in Glasgow and a death date noted as June 11, 1881. The information was submitted by a member and does not have any detail of marriage nor parents. If that death date is near to what you know, there may be the possibility of contacting the submitter.
Good luck,
Catherine

Hello Alsoran
Is it a paper document you have?
Have you tried to look at the Pioneers Index for Vic, or micro-fiche?
They should be available in your state library to search, perhaps you may be able to get a better look at his name.

Hi Alsoran,
Would you know of any siblings for Thomas? It might help find the family if they were in Glasgow.

Appologies if i am stating the obvious but if you are looking for Scottish forebears you wont find them on Ancestry unless they moved to England or emigrated to America. This is purely in case you go look for other Scottish records on it

Devine
Just a note to say that I also have "Devine" in my family line.
My Devine was a Catherin Devine who died in 1953, in Coatbridge,West Old Monkland,Lanarkshire,Scotland. Catherine was originally Catherine Carr, she was 1st married to George Carr(My GG grandfather.) 2ndly she then married Henry Devine and 3rdly she married Manus Devine.
They lived in Cross Street ,Carmyle. She married Manus 19 May 1929 in Hutchesontown,Glasgow. (they were Roman Catholics).
I do not know if there is any connection with your line.... If you think there is please comtact me. Regards William Kerr (Carr)

Hi
Thomas Devine is my great grandfather also. See http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com ... George.htm for our details.
Thomas Devine b 1834 Glasgow married Lucy Niemann b. 8.7.1840 in Bremen, on 2 June 1858 at Epsom in Bendigo Victoria. I have a photocopy of the marriage certificate, from a book "A Niemann Family History" by Jessie L Cafiso,
Thomas was a butcher, of what looks like "Elysian Flat". His parents were James Devine, a tailor, and Matilda Tomlinson.
Her parents were (from page 4 of the book) Johann Christian Niemann b. 1799 and Tabeta Margarete Ostermann b 1805. They had four sons plus Lucy. I will read the relavant parts of the book if you want further details.
I would appreciate whatever information you can offer.

Re: Devine origins?.....
Sorry, in my earlier reply I said Johann Christian Niemann, but I should have said Johann Heinrich Niemann, whose name on his marriage certificate is given as John Henry.alsoran wrote:My great grandfather, Thomas Devine, married Lucy Niemann in 1858, in Sandhurst (now Bendigo), Australia. Johann Heinrich born 27-6-1799 baptised 30-6-1799 in St Peter's cathedral Bremen.
Incidentally the Devines were not Scots but Irish most likely from Donegal and Galway but also possibly elsewhere in Ireland. I can provide references to the Irish origin and DNA results.
In Erse the surname was O'Daimhin pronounced like Dayveen see MacLysaght "The Surnames of Ireland".
