Hi all, here´s the thing. In spite of being logged on and being able to post on the TS forum, I have been unable to send PMs for the past six weeks or so. My mailboxes are pretty empty. Andrew has patiently checked everything at his end, and I have tried a laptop on the same line with success, so the problem is in my machine. Andrew thinks that clearing out my Temporary Internet Files about two months ago should not have done any harm, so the question is, what the heck is wrong?
The beast is a two year old Dell with Win XP home.
Looking forward to any help whatsoever - its embarrassing not to be able to PM to apologise when (not if!) ones steps on someone´s toes or worse.
Thanks in anticipation,
Thrall

Which Internet browser do you use? Is it Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, Mozilla Firefox, Opera or another?
The reason I ask is that as a temporary fix and/or to help solve the problem it might be worth installing another browser, logging onto TS and then trying to send a PM. If that works then it at least narrows down the problem a bit as it is iscolated to IE, if not then it's a windows problem- most likely permissions.

Hello.
I had a woe earlier today replying to a PM; got a screen that looks like when you get to an unavailable website. I then went onto the forum and found the person in the memberlist and was able to send them a PM regarding their enquiry. I use IE6 on WinXP Home SP2.

It sounds like just a timeout. If everything was OK thereafter then it should be fine.
Cheers

Hi all, one update is that I seem to be able to reply directly to a received PM, but not take the initiative, if that is comprehensible. Nelmit PMed me now as Andrew has also done, and I could answer, at least the correct message came up stating the PM was sent from me.
Rab, I have always used Internet Explorer.
Is this making things easier or not?
Thanks again,
Thrall

To be honest it shouldn't make any difference but obviously something is going a bit AWOL. It is most likely something to do with "cookies" which Andrew referred to by removing your temporary internet files. Having exhausted that avenue I can only assume it's a browser problem or possibly a permissions problem.Thrall wrote:Hi all, one update is that I seem to be able to reply directly to a received PM, but not take the initiative, if that is comprehensible. If you open Internet Explorer and use the menu to open TOOLS and the INTERNET OPTIONS. Go to the PRIVACY tab and check that the setting is not set to HIGH. Also while there go to ADVANCED and click the button which is named RESTORE DEFAULTS. Remember to press OK to come out as CANCEL will discard these changes.
If this does not work then my advice, you may not wish to try it, would be to download Firefox. It's a great browser but more importantly when if you try it then it would eliminate either Windows or your internet browser being the problem. You can download it, free, from the following page:
http://www.mozilla.org/download.html
Choose Firefox 1.5 for windows (5mb). If this is too big a file to download and install then I understand.

Hi Rab, I did your fix; privacy was "medium" so OK I presume, and advanced settings changed slightly when I went to default - but the PM I tried to send you went nowhere!
I´ll try Firefox tomorrow with a clearish head.
Thank you again,
Thrall
Whisky may not cure the common cold..
but it fails more agreeably than most other things.

Another possibility is one that I have set up on my PC (Win XP home SP2 and Internet Explorer 6).
Tools --> Internet Options --> Security --> Trusted Sites
and
Tools --> Internet Options --> Privacy --> Sites
Set up both to have www.talkingscot.com as trusted sites. Note - that has to be your decision whether or not to trust www.talkingscot.com .
All the best,
Andrew Paterson

I had a problem on another forum I used to post on which affected a handful of us.The admins were never able to get to the root of the problem so it's not uncommon. Using IE at home I could use all the functionality of the forum but at work, also using IE, I could not access some buttons. In the end I had to copy the lines from the address window at home and paste them in any time I wanted to use them at work.
Oddly enough I'm now retraining at hom to be a Web Designer but obviously haven't learned enough yet that I know the essentials.
I hope you have better luck with the new browser.
Cheers
