Post by utrecht003 » Wed Jan 11, 2006 9:31 pm

I have a george rillie born abt 1820, married in Glasgow bef 1846. Is the name RILLIE recognized in Ireland, as I "suspect" that is his place of birth or would it be the enumerators interpretation of Reilly for example.
My sister is married to a Rillie in Scotland.

Hi

Quick search of the IGI
George Reilley marrying a Margaret Navy 08 Jan 1843 in Gorbals.

The only family found was a Margaret Reilly born 20 Apr 1856 Hutchesontown to George Reilly and Margaret Niven.

Maybe a look in the 1841 or 51 census or Margaret's BC will give a clue to his place of birth.

If you go to http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm and type in Reilly, you will be given the common variations in spelling throughout Ireland along with a County by County breakdown of where the name/s occured most. Hope this is of interest.
