Scots Occupations 1800-50.....

Post by Bairdie » Thu Jan 12, 2006 9:34 pm

Hi,
can anybody tell me the difference between a Wright and a Joiner in the 1800-1850 period in farmlands around Dumfries.
I obviously have got preconceived modern day ideas of the occupations. I also appreciate that their are various types for each occupation, but the documents stating these occupations do state Joiner on one and Wright on another.
Thanks Martin

Hello Martin,

A look at SP occupations gives definitions -
Wright - Carpenter
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/conte ... r=551&1002 and
Joiner - One who makes things with wood.
