George Leys-born 1830 @ Leochel, died 1910 @ Sarnia, Ontario

Post by ysabeau » Fri Jan 13, 2006 6:39 pm

The above was the illegitimate son of Ann Williams (1808-1894) and James Leys (0000-0000).

In 1841 was living with mother @ Leochel, then in 1855 returns from Port Sarnia, Canada to marry Jane Skene @ Tarland/Migvie.
The certificate states his father James, is a Hotel Keeper @ Boston, USA.

Would love to learn of his movements between 1841 and 1855.....

Update : Have found an article in the Canadian Biographical Dictionary and Portrait Gallery and it would appear George emigrated in 1853 to Canada.
Will hopefully find him in 1851 when the census is completely computerised

Hi Ysabeau

Sounds like your man got around a bit. It's fascinating trying to work out why folk travelled to the places they did.

Hope you're still making progress.

Hi ~
Where did you get your information? Are you sure the James Leys that emigrated to the US is this George Leys father? George Lets once he was in Canada did very well. He went into business with his uncle Alexander Leys and eventually took over the business. From 1880 to 1882 George Leys was the mayor of Sarnia, Ontario. In 1885 (listed as a widower) he remarried.
His uncle Alexander Leys is the brother of my great great great grandmother, Jean. She married John Stewart. I (actually we ... as there are a few of us) are still looking for the actual marriage record/date for this union. Jean was christened in Glenmuick in 1800, and John Stewart was born either in Strathdon or Loch Lee, Forfarshire. They definitely lived in Strathdon once married as their children were born in Corgarff, Strathdon, Aberdeenshire.
Any help would be amazining.

Hello Tealynn and welcome to [talkingscot]

I hope you get a response from your post, although ysabeau has not been on the forum for several years now. It sounds as if it was George Ley's marriage certificate that stated his father was a hotel keeper in Boston. Do you have any information that would suggest the contrary?

Best of luck with your research!

Sarah

Hi Sarah ~
I have never seen his marriage certificate. Although I am not new to genealogy ... this section of the Leys clan is a new endeavour. Can I safely assume this was his first marriage rather than the 1885 second one?

Do you know if ysabeau was directly related to George Leys? Where did he find the marriage certificate? Scotlandspeople? I am looking for other Leys ancestors as well as Stewarts from Aberdeenshire. Other Scottish ancestors are as follows: Hossies (Hosie, Hose, Mclehose) from Denny, Stirlingshire and Wilson from Comrie area of Perthshire. Also looking for Janet Wilson's mother's birthplace. Her name was Ann Philp and she was married in the 1780's to David Wilson.

Yes, am sure of paternity of George Leys and, as stated in original posting, his marriage to Jane Skene - @ Tarland, Aberdeenshire (12/09/1855) has father James Leys as hotel keeper @ Boston USA.

James (1807-1887), as far as I am aware married a Jane Somers (1816-1895) - date/place unknown and their children Jane (1837) + Mary (1839) + William (1841) + Jeanette (1843) + Emma (1845) were all born @ Vermont.
1850 census has James with wife and above children @ Boston, USA........

Jane Skene, born c1825 @ Tarland, Aberdeenshire - daughter of John Skeke/Ann Moir - died, according to family MI @ Tarland, @ Sarnia (07/09/1881)....

According, to a Canadian researcher who kindly made further investigations on my behalf, George married an Adelaide Somebody - place/date unknown - who died suddenly @ Toronto (1890). His third wife, Etta Burns, died c1939....

No direct relationship.......The mother of George Leys was Ann Williams, daughter of George Williams/Helen Dickson. I am descendant of her younger brother William Williams

Poor thing died of typhoid fever with heart failure at age 42.

The marriage cert (Oct 3 1888) has her name as Adelaide Louisa Arksey, age 40, spinster, born in East Williamsburg, Ontario, daughter of George and Harriet Arksey. She is with them on the 1881 census.

All the best,
Sarah
