James Leys (0000-0000) AT Boston, USA in 1855 - Updated.....

Post by ysabeau » Fri Jan 13, 2006 6:48 pm

I have reason to believe - from marriage certificate of son George - the above was a Hotel Keeper @ Boston in 1855, although originally from Tarland/Leochel areas of Aberdeenshire.

Would love to find anything further......

Do you have any other details such as spouses and potential date of immigration? Also, any idea of an age range?

Thank you for replying.....

Problem is I know nothing more about James than the information George (born 1830ish) gave on his marriage certificate to Jane Skene @ Tarland in 1855.
George's residence, according to the certificate, was Port Sarnia Canada so I am assuming he must have made contact with his father James, sometime before his return to Scotland.

Don't know whether it's helpful but George's mother, Ann Williams (1808-1894) was born, lived and died @ Leochel Cushnie, Aberdeenshire.

Hi Ysabeau

I'd have a look for you but my access to the census records is no longer active :( I can tell you that Ancestry.com has both 1840 and 1850 (note US Censuses are done on the even year) complete US census images online and are indexed by every name and not just head of household. If no one volunteers a lookup perhaps you could sign up for a 2 week free trial of ancestry? If you don't want to continue the subscription be very very sure to follow all the directions for cancelling within the time limits  A google search or starting with Cyndi's List will give you plenty of links to read and learn more about the data they contain.

Sorry can't help further :?

Best wishes
Jean

Thank you Jean for your advice

Now have reason to believe the above James might have been the son of John Leys/Janet McDougal born 10/07/1807 @ Glenmuick.....

In view of my last experience of Ancestry and trying to cancel membership, am wary of "re-joining", although am probably on their blacklist !!!!
But if this is the only way to find James, will have to be brave/resolute.

Hi Ysabeau

If you think your James was born abt 1807 then doubtful the immigration record I found would be him. Can't believe the age would be that far out!! As for the ancestry subs blacklist  .....I think there may be alot of us on that  :D

Good luck and best wishes

I checked the 1840 and 1850 US census. Only person who might be a match is a James Leys in Boston, born 1807 and is a tailor. He was born in Scotland. The 1840 census has only head of household and age range of dependents. No specific names or place of birth.

In 1860, there is the same James Leys with a wife Jane(she was born in Vermont) born in Scotland but again occupation is a tailor. Lived in Boston.

No other close matches that I could see in the Boston area.
Will keep trying!- Kristin
