North Kessock.....

Hi
Does North Kessock, Inverness fall into Kilmuir Parish - anyone know?
Looking for the birth of a Jessie Smith aged 6 in the 1881 census shown below as I think her father may be Hugh shown here (who I've not found a wife for yet!) and he in turn may be the Hugh who was the son of Lachlan Smith (my 3rd gr granduncle born in Tain 1823 - its along story!) :

Also, do you think "Ponts man" for Hugh's occupation is Points man? Or is this another occupation?

seems to suggest it was in Avoch /Knockbain, both Ross & Cromarty parishes (which would seem to make sense...)?

Hi Lesley,

The 1890s parish maps that I would normally direct people to miss out mainland Inverness-shire, Ross & Cromarty and more, so I had to dig a bit deeper.

The United Parishes of Kilmuir-Wester and Suddy, more commonly (or more recently, according to the 1840s Statistical Accounts of Scotland) known as Knockbain, Ross & Cromarty.

Daughter of Hugh, as I'd guessed and Margaret Paterson, ...who does not appear, from the birth entry, to be his wife.... hmm. Kinda explains why my marriages searches weren't going too well....

Hugh's occupation in 1891 is "(puntsman) & Gen.lab"

I think this explains the earlier "pontsman" - We're talking boats here I think.

Hi Lesley,
If this is of any help I have Patiences who moved from Petty en masse to Rockfield Village, Tarbat. There was also a marriage of a Janet Smith from Petty to James Patience also Petty in 1856.Later shown in Rockfield where they died.

Thanks for the links. Lovely area - been up that way a few times and loved it.

My Jessie married in 1899 to a James McLachlin. Sadly, she died in 1914, aged 40, at the Lunatic Asylum, Elgin.
