My Scottish Surnames - FORSYTH WHYTE MAILER SHAND.....

Post by Wickiwoo » Fri Jan 20, 2006 4:01 am

Grandmother Jean/Jane Mailer FORSYTH b 1889 at Stirling, dau of Michael Bruce FORSYTH and Helen WHYTE. Siblings James b1881, Robert Whyte b1884, Michael Bruce b 1886, Ann Shand b 1891, Andrew b 1892, Albert ? & Helen b1894.
Jean married Benjamin Martin Athol Pearce in Paisley in 1919 and went to NZ as warbride. Brother Andrew followed. Families in NZ then AUSTRALIA well documented. I live in Geelong in Victoria, Australia
Jean wrote to two spinster sisters Nan and Nellie until her death in 1968.
Nil further known of Scottish end of Family - My grandmother used to say she had family members who were Presbyterian ministers so spent a lot of time in Church on Sundays.
Through the Scottish Census and BMD together with IGI - I have found info about the FORSYTH and WHYTE families - and also the CUMMING LOGGIE HUTCHEON LEITH MARSHALL HORN HENDERSON THOMPSON FERGUSON MAYER & LOW/LAW but would love to link up with fellow descendents of these families.
I have photocopy of a photo with Michael Bruce FORSYTH and Helen WHYTE taken in their later years surrounded by about 30 people. Sadly I do not know who any of them are.

Hi Vicki

Given the number of siblings that your grandmother had, I'd say that there's a reasonable to good chance of locating living relatives in Scotland.

If you had had location information combined with an unusual surname or two that could have been a possible shortcut.

Jean and Andrew emigrated, and Nan and Nellie (probably Ann and Helen) never married.

A quick check on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk shows that Robert and Michael junior died single leaving James Alexander Whyte FORSYTH who married, but there are no matching death records, so either he too died after 1955, or emigrated.

If the former, then there could obviously be children and living relatives in Scotland, but you would need to visit NRH in Edinburgh of engage the services of a researcher to follow up in the records that are not yet on-line, - a fairly straightforward process.

If this didn't work then you would need to go back to siblings of Michael FORSYTH senior, - it looks like there were several brothers, - and trace forward.

Thanx for your prompt reply David.
From family stories - two brothers drowned young (don't know if as children or young men) and another brother migrated to Canada.
Could not find Albert on Scotlandspeople at all!
So my stories seem to agree with your findings.
Of all those people in the photo with Michael Bruce and Helen Whyte - there must be some descendents eh!
Plan to do more research on Scotlandspeople soon - waiting for 1841 and 1851 Census to be added - so will name of James Alexander's wife and when married etc - then check Canadian Census records.

One aged 18, reported as accidental, the other aged 47, not accidental, sadly.

That has to be James Alexander Whyte FORSYTH and wife Ann Christie WATSON plus wains if any

But where does the info on Albert come from, as I couldn't find him anywhere?

Aye but where from?, - two brothers died single, three (2 brothers, 1 sister) emigrated, - NZ and Canada, and two unmarried sisters in Scotland

You are correct in asking 'where from?' re finding any living Scottish descendents. Would be very distant relations eh!
Albert was named by the family as one of my grandmother's brothers.
Nevermind.
At least I am in contact with two of Andrew's (NZ) descendents. One even took photos of homes my mother lived in (NZ) when she was a little girl in the 1920s before family moved to Oz.
How are you with Irish parish records? when you don't know the townland they came from. Have 13 Irish ancestors from as many counties in this category!!

Again - doing another review of family tree -
AND I certainly have found so much more this time around - thank you ScotlandPeople and Ancestry and the Internet generally.
I found a McKechnie web page that had my gt grandfather Michael Bruce Forsyth's SISTER Ann with photos of her self, husband and children - followed that line down to Elizabeth Ann Forsyth Porges who married Watson - She was then known as Elizabeth Porges Watson and had lots to do with the book CRANFIELD - recently watched the TV series.
So I have not given up on finding living Forsyth descendants - sadly Elizabeth above died about 5 years ago and did not have any children.

On the WHYTE side - I found lots out about gt grandmother Helen Whyte's brother Andrew Coventry WHYTE - Sea Captain - died in Canada 1898 but mentioned on headstone at DOLLAR in Scotland with wife Isabella and three of their children.

Still looking for living rels of FORSYTH and WHYTE

Regards
Vicki
