Just a wee note to say i can't see Terence anywhere in Ayrshire 1851 census.
So possibly he was still in Ireland.

Yes I feel that he was back in Ireland probably helping the grandparents.
In 1861, he may have been in the army already as he had a stint in the military according to the 1871 census in Scotland where he was single, and living with a brother. Lastly, on his death cert. he was known as Terence Dempsey a.k.a. Henry Morgan. Morgan was his mother's maiden name so he must have been staying with his maternal grandparents
