What is a teamster?.....

Post by fmackay » Sat Jan 21, 2006 9:22 pm

Can someone please tell me what a teamster did or does?
Found it listed as an occupation in Canadian attestation papers for World War 1.

Hello
My wife also has a member of her family who was a Teamster when he joined the army in Canada, Not sure but I think he drove a team of horses.
He joined in Lethbridge Alb.

Although teamsters originally drove teams of horses, by WW1, your fellow could have been a truck driver. My grandfather, a truck driver who died in 1978 was a "Teamster", a member of the union, The International Brotherhood of Teamsters. It has American and Canadian locals. You can see some of the history of the Teamsters Union at http://www.ibtstw.org/teamsters/default.html or google for more info.

Hi Cathy
Thanks for replying.
I will check out the website. I like adding a bit of "padding" to my folk!
