Hi Heather,

The easy part is "Parish of Strachan". I will have to consult the maps to see if I can come up with the mill name.

All the best,

Hello,
It looks to me like Waulkmill (pronounced walk mill). A waulkmill is a form of mill (perhaps related to making cloth) as I know of several houses/places throughout Scotland simply called Waulkmill. I think the parish of Strachan is in Aberdeenshire near Banchory(?) and that that is where your Waulkmill is.
Good luck with your research.

Hi Heather,

In Strachan Parish, Kincardineshire (just over the county boundary from Aberdeenshire), there is Waulkmill west of Strachan village. There is also a Wauk Mill south of the village. There is likely to be many Wau(l)k Mills around Scotland.

These can be seen on sheet 66 - Banchory at http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/ea ... _list.html

To find Waulkmill, click on the eastmost point of Birse parish, the dark green parish above the centre of this map. Waulkmill and Strachan are in the uncoloured area [Kincardineshire] immediately east of that eastmost point of Birse parish.

See also the modern map of the same area at " link to current map".

All the best,

Andrew Paterson
