Pet name Mattie

Post by StewL » Tue Jan 24, 2006 1:44 am

I was wondering if anyone on the forum could give me a clue as to the pet name "Mattie", what it may actually be. I have thought of Margaret, but any other suggestions welcome. :D

My uncle Alex Stewart b. 1911 married a "Mattie" probably in Airdrie or nearby, probably in the 1930's/40's?

A friend is going to NRH soon and she offered to look up some names for me that arent yet available online. So I would like to get as much information as I possibly can. :D

Hi Stew - who knows!? - my Mum's best friend is "Mattie" - real name Matilda. I have an aunt "Mattie" - real name Martha! I also have a great-aunt Margaret.... known as Martha. The Scots are good at giving their children one name, then calling them something else.
Adam/Aird/Bell/Beveridge/Clark/Davidson/Dunn/Millar/Morning/ McKinlay/McVake/McVickers/Pryde/Robertson..... and Smith!

Hi Stewie,
Here's a site I use a lot for forenames and surnames when looking for variations.

For forenames scroll to the top.
Hope this helps,

Hi Stewie

My cousin, who lived in Neilston but now lives in Canada, was always referred to as Mattie but she was christened Martha.

Hope this helps

I'm with Martha - had an Aunt Mattie and always assumed she was Matilda - but no, she was Martha.

A belated reply to an old post I found today regarding my Aunt Mattie, thanks to a kind soul her Sunday name was Martha McInroy Shaws McFadyen.

Seem most of you were correct with the thoughts thats her name would be Martha :D =D>
