Hi all
just joind so this is my first post
looking for info on my Ggrandmother Mary Douglas B Scotland c1834
she married John Sewell pre 1853
I believe this is her family in 1841 her father was born Hawick I have never found a marriage for Mary &John in Scotland or England but I have both death certs and birth certs of their children in Carlisle Cumberland I have all Marys history from the birth of James Sewell born Carlisle 1854
but I would love to prove that the family below are correct I feel with out finding a marriage for Mary its going to be impossible I can trace one of her grandchildren born Dumfries but the address is only Greenbrae Loaning and its missing from 1881 census so I am not able to check who was living there in 1886 the time of G Grandsons bith
This looks like them from the 1841 census for Dryfesdale, Dumfries

Hullo Audrey
Good to have you with us on Talking Scot.
The family you have found on the 1841 Census appears to be
Robert DOUGLAS and Mary SCOT
A parent search on the International Genealogicla Index will give the list of their children whose ages correspond.
Their daughter Mary was born on 15th April 1833 in Ewes, Dumfries according to a submission.
Perhaps searching some of this Mary's siblings' information could help move your search forward.
Best wishes
Catriona
P.S. Can't find a marriage for Robert and Mary either

A warm welcome to TalkingScot
There is a entry on the LDS site for a Mary Douglas born 15 April 1833 to a Robert Douglas and Mary Scott in Ewes Dumfries. This has to be treated with caution. No sign of parent's marriage.

Hi Audrey and Welcome!
After reading the part of your post that refers to...

I have absolutely no idea if these might be connected or not but the address seemed to be too much of a coincidence to pass by.
So tell me.....is this any help or not???
Best wishes

I decided to have a double check of the 1881 census. First off I learned that there was a Greenbrae described as being a portion of the village of Stoop which was situated 1 mile NE of Dumfries. Taking this as a good sign I decided to search the Lowlands, Dumfries, and village of Stoop.....but there ain't none listed!!!....So I settled for Dumfries and proceeded to pull up all DOUGLAS inhabitants in 1881.l Upon checking each family I stumbled onto this one....audrey wrote:...snipped......but I would love to prove that the family below are correct I feel with out finding a marriage for Mary its going to be impossible I can trace one of her grandchildren born Dumfries but the address is only Greenbrae Loaning and its missing from 1881 census so I am not able to check who was living there in 1886 the time of G Grandsons birth ....snipped.....

Hi Audrey
Well....then let me jump over to the known family in 1881! And this is what appears to be Mary's son John and wife Catherine
Dwelling: 31 Burns St
Census Place: Caldewgate, Cumberland, England
Source: FHL Film 1342245 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 5159 Folio 128 Page 42

Catherine SEWELL M 27 F Carlisle, Cumberland, England
Rel: Wife
Isaac SEWELL 4 M Carlisle, Cumberland, England
Rel: Son
Ann SEWELL 6 m F Carlisle, Cumberland, England
Rel: Daur
and it is also interesting to note that he was a hatter and they were then living right in a ward of the city of Carlisle. Why would they move to Dumfries and would his occupation change by 1886???? Or perhaps the move was family related and not job related???? Were there any other children born to them in Dumfries?? Where were they in 1891 anyhow?? I notice that John states he was born in Carlisle....and he was the firstborn wasn't he?.....so that means that Mary was south of the border at or soon after her marriage in 1854???
Sorry....so many questions....so few answers
Best wishes
