Today I found this record on the Ellis Island site and I wonder if anyone who has access to the 1930 US census might be able to find him - if he stayed in the US - which I am not certain of
According to SP he was born 1893 Colinton, Midlothian
Ellis Island Record

Many thanks to anyone who might offer me some assistance on this one
Kind regards

Barbara,
Andrew Poyner did not jump up to say look at me, look at me in the 1930 census either using the exact spelling Poyner or using soundex. Doesn't mean he was not in the US at the time. He may have been "overlooked" and not indexed by Ancsetry.com or he just wasn't counted.
I did a search on the Social Security Death Index and came up with this…
Andrew POYNER Birth Date: 29 Jan 1892
Death Date: Jun 1974
Social Security Number: 408-64-5189
State or Territory Where Number Was Issued: Tennessee
Death Residence Localities ZIP Code: 37064, Franklin TN
There are five additional Andrew/Andy Poyner listed in the SSDI which can be seen on the
www.FamilySearch.org web site but none with a birthdate close to your 1893 date. Do you have Andrew's exact birth date?
Take care out there.

Thank you for looking for that for me I appreciate your time and trouble.
No, I don't have his exact birthdate, I ran out of credits before I got that far.........I do know he died 1955 but just not where. His brother died in Vancouver and it was while I was researching him that I doscovered Andrew arriving in the US. As I said before, he may not have stayed but I appreciate your taking a look for him anyway.
Kind regards
Barbara

Hello Barbara
Your Andrew Poyner looks like he did'nt stay just a visit . A friend by the name of John White at 306 West 56 Street Manhattan,NY. He also listed his place of birth as Juniper Green ,Scotland and his father John Poyner at 80 Vonally Road Edinburgh Scotland..
Good Luck
Nancy

I am a bit mystified at the address 80 Vonally Road. I am assuming that it is Bonaly Road, Colinton that had been absorbed into Ediburgh's expanding boundaries in 1920. I know the area well as it is only a two minute walk from home to there. Number 80 and its neighbours are all 1980s houses. Prior to the 1980s there would have been only 20 to 30 houses in Bonaly Road. Beyond that were the fields of Bonaly Farm, then Bonaly Tower, Bonaly Scout Centre (presumably post 1920s), and then the road peters out into Pentland Hills. Of the houses that were in Bonlay Road in the 1920s, I question if they were numbered at that time. I think the numbering of the houses in most of Colinton came later after complaints from Edinburgh Corporation (I read that somewhere) that most parts of Colinton had only house names within named streets.
Next time I am in Edinburgh Central Library, I will check the Edinburgh Directories for that period and see what address is given for this family.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson

If what you are saying is that you found Andrew Poyner on the 1930 US census - I have another mystery besides Vonally being Bonaly and the numbers being out - yes, his father was John Poyner of Colinton, but he died in 1927
The plot thickens

Where to now I wonder.
Kind Regards
Barbara

Barbara,
The information Nancy is refering to is located in Andrew's 1923 Ellis Island arrival records. Not from census listings.

Thank you for clarifying that for me, Bob. I wasn't sure what Nancy was referring too. Andrew's father was alive in 1923 so that makes sense now.
