Brick Wall 2 - William Rodger.....
Hi,
I was hoping someone out there could possibly help me. I'm trying to find info on William Rodger, born c.1798 in Bothwell, Lanarkshire. His parents according to his death cert, were William & Mary. His father's occupation was a farmer. He died in 1881, in Glasgow. I know he married Janet Johnston in 1831 in either New/Old Monklands, but that's all I can find out.
Any info would be grately appreciated!!

Hi Daryl
Have you tried looking for William in the census material? He should be there from 1841-1871 with an appearance in 1881 depending on when he died during that year.
best wishes

Hi Darylrodger and Welcome!
Not knowing the date of death in 1881 I checked the census just to see what might be on it. If William did not die until after April 3-4 then the only enumerated likely candidate for him is:
Dwelling: Springhill House
Census Place: Neilston, Renfrew, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203580 GRO Ref Volume 572-2 EnumDist 2 Page 39
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
John RODGER M 58 M Larbert, Stirling, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Assurance Agent
Margaret RODGER M 57 F Maryhill, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Wife
Susan RODGER U 20 F Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton, Scotland
Rel: Daur
Occ: Power Loom Weaver
David RODGER U 17 M Barrhead, Renfrew, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Field Worker
Charles RODGER U 15 M Barrhead, Renfrew, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Clerk
Wm. RODGER W 78 M Cumbernauld, Dunbarton, Scotland
Rel: Visitor
Occ: Agricultural Labourer
I realize the age is off a bit as well as the place of birth. But it is possible it could be him....if he were alive at all that is!!!
On his death certificate...who was the informant? I had a quick look on the IGI and did not find any children born to William and Janet. Have you searched on SP for her death using the maiden and married surnames? If not there perhaps she died before statutory registration began in 1855. Perhaps even she died before they had any children.
Best wishes
Jean

William Rodger
Hi,
Thanks for your help. I've just located some extra details about William.
He died on Sept 29th 1880, in 344 Crown St. Govan, Glasgow aged 82 years. He was predeceased by his wife Janet. His son James was the informant, and he resided at 25 Govanhill St, Govanhill, Glasgow.
Is this info of any help ? I had a look for him in the 1871 census, but couldn't find him.

Hello again
Well first off you can forget everything I told you so far !!
With William's death in 1880 that is not him listed on the 1881 census. However.....knowing his address sure helps point the way to who was living there in 1881
Dwelling: 25 Govanhill St

Janet RODGER M 27 F Robertstown ?, Renfrew, Scotland

Rel: Son
James RODGER 2 M Pollockshaw, Renfrew, Scotland
Rel: Son

This surely must be his son, James, the informant! And if he's accurate in his memory then you should find William living in Cambuslang perhaps on the 1841 census...maybe on the 1851 census??? It would be the first clue to track down. Unfortunately we're still waiting on both those census indexes to be released on Scotlands People (very soon we're promised...very soon
) but at least the Cambuslang 1841 one is available on FreeCEN. The bad news is there is no William Rodger enumerated there. Looks like it's wait for a chance to search the 1851.
Best wishes
Jean

William Rodger
Hi Jean,
Thank you so much for finding William's family in the 1880 census!
That's them alright. Yes, I think your right about waiting until the 1851 census is released until I have the chance to check it out.
Regards,

Re William Rodger & James
Hi Daryl,
I've no problems finding a William RODGER born abt 1798 Bothwell in the Lanarkshire 1851 & 1861 censuses.
Actually he's the only one who fits for age & birthplace, occupation is a carter (a widower at Calderbank, Old Monkland).
He does have a son James (hammerman - blacksmith), but he's as born Old Monkland abt 1841....
Do you know if James has any siblings?
Ta - Jack
ps, finding William & son James in 1871 might be useful in tracing them in earlier censuses.

William Rodger
Hi Jack,
Thanks for looking William up. I had a go yesterday looking for him in the 1851 census, without any luck! His son James had two other siblings, Jane & John, but they both had died by 1880. I suppose the only other option is to look for William's birth in Bothwell in 1798.

Hi Daryl,
I'll give you these anyway just because this James does have siblings Jane & John.
But whether they are "yours" is another matter! You'll know by the ages of them.

William Rodger
Hi Jack,
Thanks for the info from the 1851/61 census. Yes, they are one and the same. I didn't know that William had a son also called William! That's a new one for me. Janet, William's wife must have died between 1848/1851, as I can't find her anywhere. I'm guessing that she should be on the 1841 census. Am I right ?
