MACLEAN/MCLEAN daughter in Scotland.....

Post by larkin » Wed Feb 01, 2006 8:28 pm

I'm hoping someone can help me locate my husband's relatives in Scotland. His grandfather was Donald McLean/MacLean b. Aug.17 1879. Inverness. His grandmother was Alexanderina Eisthen b. 1877 Morayshire. They were married Nov. 1903 at Auldearn, Nairn. They had at least one child born in Scotland, (a girl possibly named Ina). They immigrated to Canada sometime before 1912 where they had 4 sons. The families of the sons are trying to locate any descendents that Ina may have in Scotland. If anyone has any information or can help me locate these people, It would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Larkin
Welcome to TalkingScot. If anyone can slove a puzzle we have cornered the market in expert solvers.

You may be able to solve your own puzzle though which is infinitely more satisfying.
You appear to have enough known facts to go onto scotlandspeople.gov.uk It's a pay per view site but is relatively inexpensive for what you get back. £6 (which I think equates to 10-12 dollars) buys 30 credits. This will allow you to view your results for 1 credit and, if they look promising, for 5 credits, view and download a copy of a birth, death or marriage register entry. StatutoryRecords go back to 1855.
This could take you back 2 or 3 generations because marriage certificates gave the names of both sets of parents. Birth certificates for each of these parents will give their parents.....
It will probably prove more difficult bridging across to Canada but you should be able to trace children born in Scotland.
Before you join up there however I would recommend a visit to the TalkingScot section on Statutory records for hints and advice on how to get the best out of your visit.

Good luck with the search :D

Hello larkin and Welcome!

With such an interesting name as Alexanderina Eisthen I though it would be short work to place her on the 1881 Census (from the LDS disks) with her family. Searches on that spelling do not work however!!

Once you view their marriage certificate from the Scotland's People website you'll know both Alexanderina and Donald's parents names as Russell has mentioned. Armed with this info you'll then know whether my suspicions are correct that this is Alexanderina as enumerated in 1881....

"EISTHEN" is exactly the way that the surname is shown on the marriage register entry, but the parents match those in the 1881 entry found by JustJean.................
