BELL, Simon b. abt. 1793.....

Post by Tunbridge » Sun Feb 05, 2006 5:16 am

Hi All: I'm new to this site and am hoping someone might be see something familiar with my current "brick wall". He goes by the name of Simon BELL and according to census information was born in Scotland. However, where in Scotland is not known. His date of birth is derived from his age (60 yrs) at the time of his death in 1853.

Simon travelled to the Isle of Man, met Jane Clague and married in Lezayre in 1813. The couple had 8 known children, the youngest of which was my 2nd grt grandfather, Henry Wesley Bell, born 1827 at Michael, IOM.

Census information also indicates Simon was a farmer (Ag Lab)/labourer. Simon's wife Jane died in 1848 at Lezayre.

I would like to determine where in Scotland he was born, and of course, who his parents were.

Thank you for any assistance.
Pat,
Mission, B.C.

Hi Pat,
Welcome to Talking Scot. The only extract for a birth of Simon Bell I could see abt 1793 on the LDS was for 1 born in Edinburgh 16 JAN 1790 Father William Bell , mother Mary Torrence. There is one other birth for a William Hall Bell Born in 1892 in Dumfries however this is a submitted record and you will need to verify the source.
Happy Hunting,

Many thanks Heather. I had already eliminated Simon Hall Bell after 2 plus years of research. The Simon Bell s/o William & Mary Torance is a possibility and just today I received copies of extracts from ScotlandsPeople for the birth of Simon 16 Jan 1790 and the marriage of his parents 31 Oct 1784. What a dissapointment! No new info at all - exactly as entered on the IGI. Oh well, back to the drawing board!

Much appreciated.
