John Muir Cameron of Glasgow

Post by emailslevn » Tue Feb 07, 2006 5:43 pm

My first posting and I need a gentle nudge in the right direction. It is also my only Scottish connection as the rest of my ancestors are Irish. How would I go about finding John Muir Cameron, Butcher, lived in Earl Street, Scotstoun, about 1932. He was married to my aunt Frances Slevin who died in the Royal Infirmary, aged 32, in 1933. I believe there was a child born at this time. I have found Frances' death but that is all the information I have.

I would be very grateful if some kind person would show me the way! Thank you.

Hello and Welcome!

I looked for a marriage on the Scotland's People website for John and Frances but so far am drawing a blank. Because the online statutory records cut off for Marriages at 1930 I thought it likely that their's might be there. Hmmmm. Maybe they married just after this??? The only other probability is a search for the birth of John Muir Cameron. Look for him under Lanark. There is only one and the father looks promising as a butcher. No way to prove this is your John Muir Cameron without the back up proof of parents named on a MC.......but it very well could be. I also looked for a death of John but struck out there too. Further searching could be done in the current records but that would entail a visit to Edinburgh.....or finding someone to visit on your behalf!

Best wishes
Jean

Hi there,

Apart from a visit to Edinburgh or Park Circus in Glasgow to look at deaths after 1955 have you tried Scotlands People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk to see if John died before 1955 as you can see this online, otherwise maybe some kind soul might have a wee look for you on a visit to either of the above.

Cheers

Stuart

Hi there

Welcome to TalkingScot ...............

There's a John Muir CAMERON of like age on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk born in Glasgow in 1896 whose father is a butcher !!, - a tempting match, but there's no record that I can see of a matching marriage, but the on-line records only go up to 1930 for the moment, so maybe the marriage was in 1931 or later.......... or in Ireland or England, - you'll need to check, or get someone to check for you at NRH in Edinburgh where the later records can be inspected.

Similarly for the possible CAMERON birth, - from 1929 onwards the Scottish birth indexes also show the maiden surname of the mother, so that it should only take a few minutes to check out that situation ........

A Scottish birth register entry also gives the place and date of the marriage of the parents.

It should be possible to trace John Muir CAMERON back several generations in the Scottish records.

Just want to say a huge thank you to your replies. I am overwhelmed at the kindness and helpfulness of you all! I have a feeling Frances and John may have married in Ireland and I shall search there when I am next over. I have been searching in ScotlandsPeople but as I hadn't got much to go on, I got rather confused. Many, many thanks, I now have a little bit more information...
