William McLoughlin/Susan Brown. Londonderry .....

Post by iwbib » Wed Feb 08, 2006 2:41 pm

Does anyone have these names on their tree ? I think they came from Kilrea, Londenderry. I think William had a brother ?Tom. I am not 100% certain of the name Tom. I believe they had a farm.

Susan, I know nothing about apart from the fact she may have died in America as the family emigrated there when William was a child but he was later brought back to Ireland and was brought up by an aunt or gran.

Interests

Londonderry -McLoughlin, Brown, Henderson, Mitchell, Williams, Gallacher
Monaghan- Weir, Crowe, Madill.

Sorry. The names belong to the McLoughlins. William was my grandfather he was born 16 June 1894 to William Mc Loughlin and Susan Brown. I believe he came to Scotland after he spent some time in military service. I know he was too young to enlist but he lied about his age. He married my gran in 1920 and never returned to Ireland. The name Tom Mc Loughlin, I think was a brother of my grandfather.

The only person who has any knowledge of him has not replied to my letter. It may have something to do with the fact that I was recently told by someone else that they heard that my grandfather could NOT return to Ireland. They did not know the reason why. I don't know if there is any truth in it at all.

Any guidence as to where I might start my research would be gratefully appreciated. S

Hi S, hope you are well :) .

If I remember, you only have William's death cert showing his parents names. How sure are you of the date and yearof birth you have posted? If you think it is accurate, you could ask the chap at this site to do an index search for you
http://www.familyulster.com/family_ulst ... quests.htm at a cost of only £1 - just choose birth and year option then in the box at payment stage put in William's details including his dob and what info you have from death cert re his parents. If this turns up nothing, you could pay another £1.00 for the year before and same for year after. If William does turn up on the index, you can then request certificate details (ie transcript of info) for £3.50. I have used this service several times myself and found it to be very good.

Also, have you seen this site before

http://www.4qd.org/bann/

it may be worthwhile having a nosey around same.

Regards for now,

M :)

Oops, forgot to also add this link for you:

http://www.inniskilling.com/

It is the site for the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers Museum - this may have been the regiment he joined.

Also, the National Archives site have Medal Cards for 5 William McLoughlins' who served in the Inniskilling Fusiliers or Dragoons in WW1. Do you know your grandad's regiment number at all? From memory it costs about £3.50 to view each:
