Hi Jean,

I'll stab a guess at the E.I.C. being the East India Company. I have no guesses for the rest.

All the best,

Hullo Jean

Could the I.P. possibly be J.P. Justice of Peace?

Lt : Lieutenant?

Best wishes

Catriona

Hi

East India Company looks good.

I.P. could be J.P. I wondered about that.

Lt. Lieutenant. Have my doubts as he can't be a Major and a Lieutenant.

Wife is listed as Major's Wife.

Jean

Could the Lt have meant he was a "Lieutenant of the county" and so nothing to do with his rank as Major?

Jean:

You can search for abbreviations and acronyms at

www.acronymfinder.com allows defining the category you are looking for - military, education, medical, etc., as well as specify the terms themselves.

www.acronymsearch.com

Possibilities include, but not limited to:

Si Settlement instructor

Dg District Governor, Director General, Deputy Governor

LT Long tour, long term

IP Isolated personnel

You will be able to eliminate many terms from the lists based on terminology = a person who once was called a shoemaker is probably now an Orthopodic Engineer

Hope this helps,
