Arkansas: Walker, Carvill, McElduff, Connaway .....

Post by Liz Turner » Tue Feb 21, 2006 12:23 am

This is a longshot - but hey I've seen what some of you guys can come up with!

I am trying to find descendants of George Walker b 5/2/1842 Hayston, Leuchars and Annie Carvill who married 8/6/1882 in Phillips County Arkansas; and of David Walker b 1/2/1848 Balmullo, Leuchars and Elizabeth Steele Miller 25/12/1875 also Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas.

These two were brothers who originally came from a family of 7 siblings born in Fife. I am descended from one of their sisters - Anne Walker and have lots of info on the family who remained in/returned to Scotland.

I know that there were descendants living in Helena and in Jonesboro in the 1960s and 1970s because Esther Elizabeth Walker, niece of the brothers was in touch with them. Esther died in the late 1960s/early 1970s.

A few nights ago I "googled" one of the names of the family and came up with a website concerning a family reunion - the names mentioned were all the ones I was looking for! Unfortunately none of the links worked so I'm stuck - anyone have any ideas??? I've left my details on a family history website in Phillips County but no replies as yet.

The names I was looking for were:- Mary Cathryn McElduff; Annie Carvill; Lorena Walker (and descendents). All suggestions gratefully received.

Liz

Lesley

Just to update you! Have had no further luck in accessing any of the sites mentioned. I emailed "Jordan" and got one back saying "I have no information" - short and to the point I think!

It was worth a try anyway, and I've lodged my details on about half a dozen places in Philips County, Arkansas. I can only sit patiently now and wait for a reply sometime.

Thanks for your help anyway.

Hi Liz,
Has anyone contacted you on this yet? I was looking for something to do while my husband was spending 1 1/2 hours in the dentist’s chair , and found the old query about your Walkers. Hope some of this is new and useful to you.

In 1880 they are in St Francis township, Phillips County, Arkansas:
Walker George, 38, Boarder, BookKeeper & Mgr, Scotland
“ David, 30, Lumber Merchant, Scotland
“ Lizzie, 25, wife, Keeps House, Scotland
“ Esther, 10/12 (born in Aug), daughter, Arkansas

In 1900, still in St Francis township:
Walker, George, Head, b. Feb 1842 in Scotland, age 58, married 18 yrs, Lawyer
-- Annie C., wife, b. Dec 1855 in Kentucky, age 44, married 18 yrs, 1 child born, 1 living
Carvill, May?, mother in law, b. Oct 1814 in South Carolina, age 85, 7 children born, 4 still living
Walker, David G., son, b. Aug 1885 in Arkansas, age 14, At school

By 1910, Annie has died and George has remarried. He and his son David are living next door to each other in St Francis:
Walker, David G., head, 24, Arkansas, Partner, Real Estate
__ Lorena B, 22, wife, Arkansas
Walker, George, head, 68, Scotland, Partner, Real Estate
__ Viola R., wife, 35, Tennessee

In 1920 they are all in the same house, and no sign of Viola. George says he is widowed (but he could mean the first wife). What is odd is that the census was taken in January, and there is a Viola Walker who died in July 1920, according to the Arkansas death index (see below). Unless it’s the wrong Viola?:

Walker, David G., head, 34, Arkansas, Abstractor, Realty Co
__ Lorena B, wife, 31, Tennessee
__ George D, son, 10, Arkansas
__ Anne L., daughter, 7, Arkansas
__ Dorothy, daughter, 2 9/12, Arkansas
__George, father, 78 widowed, Scotland

By 1930 George has died and David & family are in Helena City:

Walker, David G., head, 44, Arkansas, Proprietor, Insurance Office Realty Dealing(?)
__Lorena B, wife, 42, Arkansas
__G. David, son, 19, Arkansas
__ Lorena, daughter, 17, Arkansas
__Dorothy, daughter,13, Arkansas
__ Frances, daughter, 4, Arkansas

Here are some other relevant records I found:

I assume David, the brother of the first George, went back to Scotland? Or did he just move to another place within the U.S.?

If you want to find living descendants and haven’t already done so, I would suggest trying to get a copy of David G. Walker’s obituary from 1968, to see who the “survived by” children and grandchildren are. Often the local library will look it up for you if you ask. Here is the library website:

Best of luck! I hope some of this is useful for you.
Sarah

Dear Sarah

Thanks for your assistance here! It's so very frustrating knowing that these descendants are still in the US and that someone in their family(ies) has done some research - evidenced by the family reunion web site I found (pity it was out of date).

I'll go through all your info over the next few days and digest it all - just wanted to say thanks just now.

By the way, some of the family did come back to Scotland to help out his aging father on the family farm. The Esther you mention living in Philips County was living in Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire in the 1970s. I remember well visiting her for summer holidays along with my gran. Esther (or Essie as she was known) was a very wee, very old lady by then and I used to listen to stories from her and my gran .....

Someone helped me out with some info when I posted a query on Roostweb and did a lot of looking up for me which was much appreciated.

Cheers again for your info.

Liz
