All Shook Up!

Post by Clydesdale » Wed Feb 22, 2006 10:47 am

Way back in 1684 Andrew Presley (My 7G-Grandfather) married Barbara Renny (or Rennie) in Peterhead. They had a son Andrew in 1686 who married Elspeth Leg in 1917.

I am advised by a Presley relative I have managed to contact in the USA, that one of Andrew and Elspeth’s children, Andrew, is attributed as being the direct descent of Elvis Presley.

I, on the other hand, come from their other son Robert born 1727 and who married Christian Jaffray in 1757 in Lonmay. :(

I have been able to lift the relevant dates from the IGI (isn’t it a wonderful record site?). However, I was wondering if anyone had previously accessed records on SP that go this far back - who could kindly let me know just what information would be available about parents of a marrying couple, or a birth, if indeed there is any at all!

I am visiting Peterhead in the summer so hope to research this further, but would like to know if I would be wasting my time as there are so many other branches to climb and my time will be limited!

HeyHey if I prove our connection via marriage can I claim Elvis as a rellie too?
When I saw Presley in your names I did think of Elvis as I recall reading (Sunday Post I think  ) about Elvis's Scottish Ancestry.Worth checking in their Archives(they must have them.) to see what they have.
My experience of OPR which is what you would have to access for this info is varied.
I have recently viewed OPR on Film at LDS Family History Centre for Crawfordjohn where there was an abundance of Birth,Marriage & Death info.None of mine but it did give an insight into the area & what was happening when my rellies lived there.
I have also viewed records with no more than "Male child to Joe Soap of this Parish-lawful son.
You pays your money & you take your chances! I would order the films via FHC if there is one near you & it is £2.40 well spent & keep your fingers crossed that there is info there.(if your FHC has the film in stock it doesn't cost-it is just if they had to order it in.)
Will PM you re what I found out about the Berry's at NRH.

Hi Joette,

I was worried that the information may be limited, but by the sound of it, it varies from to area to area so there may be hope yet of finding out more. The Presley chap in the USA from whom I got the dates etc. has done quite a bit of research down his side and come up with some really interesting facts about his direct acestor, but he didn't elaborate on how his side joined up to mine. No doubt that will come through later.

Also it looks as if some of the dates he has given me are a bit out (Thank you CatrionaL :) ) so I need to check them again. I think your idea of ordering the film from the nearest FHC centre is the best way to go. It is about 15 miles from here and I have never visited it - I think this is the time to try!

Look forward to hearing from you.
Cheers
Clydesdale :)

Hi

If the following link works, it should take you to an article - Elvis roots 'lead to Scotland'

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/3559331.stm

It states that most of the Presleys living in Scotland during the 18th and 19th centuries could be found in Aberdeenshire and that they were based in Lonmay and the nearby villages of New Deer, Old Deer and Tarves.

Hope the article helps/is of interest

There's a BIG website that has famous folks' "Trees".

Lucille Ball could get back about 127 years before the "Pilgrim Fathers"

Bing Crosby has a GREAT line in Crosbys (completely omitting Harry Lillis)

Walt Disney claims Irish blood, he was born (wrong side of the sheets) in Spain. His mother died on the way to America and an Irish family looked after him. FACT!

However "Elvis", regardless of the Aberdeenshire link, can be proven to have Paisley roots (probably, but not proven yet, from Aberdeenshire).

Don't get "All Shook Up" if you can't make the link.

Marion Morrison (100% Antrim) doesn't have the same ring as John Wayne. Yet there's more Waynes than Morrisons on the "John Wayne" site!!!!!
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Thanks Jim, just my sort of joke this time of night !

I Googled and saw the BBC site earlier today, followed the links and saw that one tree disputed the other ..........., but i suspect now (due to wdytya) there will be as many people claiming to be related to Elvis as their are sightings and will turn into 21st Centurys Loch Ness issue
And in his own words....................well song !
Well a hundred years from now I won't be crying
A hundred years from now I won't be blue
My heart will have to forget that we ever met
But I won't care a hundred years from now

Not much encouragement for anyone trying to establish an Elvis link :-
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

Hi all,

Thank you Jacky for the news item - made interesting reading and it was strange to see the same names as those I have found. The chances of there being a link are very remote, but it doesn't bother me one bit. It is all a bit of fun that I can share and laugh at with the family  . I am now looking forward to my Peterhead visit even more so I can do some more research and get some photos for my files.

The website you spoke of Andy sounds fascinating - can you post us a link please, and does it have information in there about proving the Paisley connection too?

It has been snowing all day here in Worcestershire - I hope you are all having better weather than I am. The dog is well cheesed off as she only got a short walk :)

Cheers
