Any help Please!.....

Post by suzyblu » Thu Feb 23, 2006 9:35 am

Can anyone please help me find any more information??

Here is what I have:

Peter Carswell married Elizabeth McNamara (no cert found).
From 1891 census: Glasgow
Peter Carswell b Italy aged 33
elizabeth Carswell aged 26 -lanarkshire glasgow
Helen aged 5
John aged 3

1901 Census Dundee
Elizabeth Carswell widow aged 33
Nelly (helen) aged 15
John 13
Matilda 8
Francis 6 - forfarshire
Caroline 4 - forfarshire
James 3
Can't find any certs for children or there marriage cert or Peter's birth or death cert. Elizabeth got remarried in 1908.

Quite peculiar. Not a trace under CARSWELL or McNAMARA with or without wildcards.

Apart from the censuses, Elizabeth's death register entry clearly shows her first husband's surname as CARSWELL.

I know it has me confused. On Elizabeth's second marriage cert it has 'spinster' so maybe Peter was alive and divorced. But it is so strange I can not find any of the childrens birth cert which would help me find their marriage date etc.

Just don't know where to look.

Hullo Susan

A warm welcome to Talking Scot.

There is a Francis Finlay CARSWELL born 1895 in Govan GLASGOW
and a Helen Anderson CARSWELL born 1885 in PAISLEY, Rfw on

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Might be worth having a look even though the place of birth is not as mentionned on the Census.

Best wishes
Catriona

I noticed that Peter's birth place in 1891 is down as Italy,
Would that be a clue? could the surname be Italian and it's sometimes written as Carswell but isn't really ?

Just a passing thought - as I don't know much about Italian !

Daughter Helen can be found born Glasgow under the name McNamara. Think this was before Elizabeth took up with Peter.

Another child, Mary, was born in 1890, birth is not registered but she died in 1891 age 9 months. Recorded as illegitimate but names Peter Carswell as the father.

Elizabeth McNamara married as a spinster in 1908 so it doesn't look like she ever jumped the broom with Peter.

Elizabeth appears to have had another daughter VERY young. Elizabeth Clark McNamara (who was married to William Dougall O'Neill) died aged 71 in 1853 so born about 1882.

Elizabeth McNamara Carrigan died aged 60 in 1931 (probably closer to 66)

I can't see a definite Elizabeth McNamara aged about 18 in 1901 but there are a couple, Elizabeth 16 staying with an aunt Margaret (McNamara) Graven also an OLDER brother Francis. No sign of either birth. Elizabeth and Francis were with the Aunt and uncle in 1891 too.

Elizabeth Clark McNamara married Willie O'Neil in Dunbartonshire aged 23 in 1905, no father named.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Thank you everyone its all very helpful. So it looks like Peter and Elizabeth never married even though she was noted as a widow (is that possible) in 1901 census could he have disappeared back to Italy???

I'm confused :? the 1891 census I found from Glasgow (Broad St) has Peter Carswell, Elizabeth Carswell , Helen and John. The 1901 has Mrs Carswell (widow) and her 6 children including the Francis I was looking for aged 6 which would match his death cert. So where does the Francis you mentioned fit in?

Why can't I find Elizabeth McNamara's birth cert?? (Theres 3 on SP but don't match).
I will keep looking.

Thanks again Andy

Hi,

I didn't say that young Elizabeth and Francis were definitely Elizabeth's children just that they were staying with Margaret Graven who was a McNamara.

Elizabeth DID have a daughter, Elizabeth Clark McNamara (no record) about 1882 and the Elizabeth staying with the auntie was the closest match. Francis the brother was about a year older. Perhaps he died and Elizabeth named another son after him.

Elizabeth Clark McNamara was married to William Dougall O'Neill in 1805 in Dunbartonshire. No father named but Elizabeth McNamara washerwoman was the mother.

Her death states no father but mother was Elizabeth McNamara later married to Peter Carswell. So 100% the correct person.

Young Elizabeth's marriage was wittnessed by a William Clark. Given the middle name this may be worth investigating further.
