Hi all,
I'm new to this site, but I think it's terrific ! It's so varied in the topics that are covered.
I'm hoping someone can help me with my " mystery ". My g-g-granda, John Sanaghan was born abt. 1850 ( haven't been able to trace a birth cert.) His parents were John Sanaghan and Agnes ( Ann) Skiffington. He married Mary O'Neil on 9th Sept, 1875 at Carfin, Parish of Bothwell. I've tried to find a death cert. on SP with NO success whatsoever. A very kind man from the Motherwell Heritage Society sent me a copy of a burial on 26th feb., 1915 in Airbles. Info. as follows : John Sannaghan, Miner, aged 60yrs, residence, Dalziel Poorhouse. Can someone explain why I'm unable to find a death cert., please ?

Glad you're enjoying the site.
Try replacing the G in John's surname with a C and I think you'll find him.

John Sannachan
Hello again Susie,
Many apologies for my earlier post. What I didn't check was the ages of the Sannachan's who died in 1915. Neither were 60.
Hopefully someone else will come up with a better answer if they have not done so already.
Regards,
Annette M

Re: death certificate
Hello Susie,
I have said it before elsewhere, but often less is more. We can be sure of 1915, fairly sure about Dalziel, but unsure about the spelling. Try a search on S*N*N, first name J*, male, county Lanark, district Dalziel, and year 1915 to 1915.
You will find that the transcriber hit two keys instead of one to produce a bizarre spelling. Although the age is a little out, that's your man.
Filling in a form through the "Contact Us" link will correct this and help future searchers.
Regards,
John

Sdanagahn
Hi Susie:
I found him via wildcards. I put in a search for John S*a*n*a
in Lanarkshire and found him as John Sdanaghan. I'm not sure why but there you are. He's listed as 57 in 1915

Can't find a death certificate
Well, excuse me while I get my breath back, I've just danced a jig around my living room ! I've FINALLY got the death cert. I've been looking for. Thank you all for your help, especially Ron.
When I find a birth cert. for John, I'll believe in miracles ! Highly unlikely, as I don't know which Catholic parish his birth was registered in.
But for now I'm satisfied.........until the next one, of course !
Kind Regards to you all
Susie

If you look up the 1855 birth cert for John's brother, Michael, that may give some clues as to where the Parents were born and perhaps an indication of where the children were Baptized.
Bet the Father came from Tyrone. Skiffington/Skeffington is found mostly in Antrim with a few wee pockets in Tyrone. I've not had any dealings with Catholic records in Tyrone but if they were married around Dungannon you may be in luck. Think they have nearly a full set of records from about 1821ish.
Think the two closest Churches from Holytown would have been in Bothwell, either St Bride's or St Aloysius Church both were opened before 1881 but I'm not sure if they were around in the 1850s.
