Canadian Expeditionary Forces .....

Post by Rach » Mon Feb 27, 2006 2:00 pm

It took some time to find my way around but eventually found an address for Laings in Canada [c. 1915] by way of the Library and Archives 'War and Military' digital website. The attestation papers give good detail and also a little description of the person. Great site if you have ancestors who emigrated and joined up.

No. It only has WW1 and the South African war as far as I can see.

Evenin' Folks,

have just confirmed that the James Mitchell I found listed on the nominal rolls on the Alberta FHS site is one of my kin! The following is the extract:-

434294 Private Mitchell, James
Nil
Mitchell, James Heath Cottage, Crathie, Aberdeen, Scotland Scotland Calgary Jan. 19, 1915
50th Battalion (2nd Rfts)

I haven't done any research in Canada before - any idea where I should start? I haven't found him on the CWGC site so am presuming that he didn't die during WW1. AS he gives his father at home in Scotland as the next of kin, I am assuming that he had not married by the time he enlisted in 1915. He was born in 1882, which makes him 33 at the time of enlistment.

All suggestions gratefully received (even if I should know the answers to my questions!)

Tish

Hi Tish,
I apologise if you have already done this but you didn't say if you had accessed his attestation papers on the website underlined above. As well as the detail you already have it also gives a description of him. His number on that website is 83. His papers don't have 'deceased' marked on them so I presume that he didn't die during that war. One of the people I was researching had the year of his death and 'deceased' written over it.
Sorry I can't help with anything else as I have found it difficult to get beyond 1913 or so apart from someone who died in B.C as they have good online vital records. Once I had the date of his death a kind person on the British Genealogy forum found his obit for me which was a real help. Have you also tried Rootsweb or Rootschat?
Good luck,
Rae

Hi Rae,

Don't apologise - I don't even follow! Do you mean the site I was on would have the attestation papers? I will take a look or maybe you meant to give me another site. SKS on this board already got me attestation papers for a different relative so I've never figured out how to do that. Was wondering how to get at info apart from military - i.e, BMD, etc.

Have you also tried Rootsweb or Rootschat?

No, not yet - but planning another marathon surfin' session tonight so will include them!

Good luck,
Rae
Thanks!

Tish

ps - don't know if I used the 'quote' system correctly - it's my first time, so apologies if this post looks erratic!

I can't work out his trade or calling though - could you make it out Rae?

Thanks again,

Tish
