I am seeking any leads or information upon the parents/family of my great grandfather John Patton who was born circa 1876 in Ireland.
John came to Scotland sometime after the 1891 census where he married Elizabeth Wigggins in Glasgow (1896) ... John died in 1899 of Scarlet fever.
The informant of Johns death was his brother William Patton.
Father: William Patton (a "small farmer" Ireland)
Mother: Elizabeth Patton (Maiden name is Fluck, or Fluke or Flucke ... spelled differently on different documents).
Unfortunately after John's death William also disappears (possibly back to Ireland) and all attempts to trace the family have been unsuccessful. No birth certificates etc.
Any information would be appreciated.
John Patton 1876 (Ireland) - 1899 (Scotland) .....

Does William, the brother, say whether the parents are dead on the Death Cert?
If not dead you may find them in the 1901 census for Ireland.

Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).
Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Both parents appear to be alive in 1899 (at least they are not marked as deceased) ..... unfortunately the surname Patton is quite common in some parts of Ireland and there are several William and Elizabeth pairings. I have also used several pay sites to try and trace the birth details for John with no success (they make Scotlands People look a fantastic bargain).
I hope to get over to Dublin sometime to begin a search in person but that will have to wait.

When you get over try to establish a cross reference between Flook/Flooke/Fluke/Fluck/Flucke and Paton/Patton.
The mother's name is very rare and you will only find variations in about four counties, Antrim, Armagh, Down and Tyrone.
So rare I suspect either Dutch or Huguenot origins.

Hi Robert, Presumably you have already cross-referenced G.V.? Though perhaps a little early for your needs, it is still a useful tool. From G.V. and a look at the maps, Donagh seems to be the only Parish (in any county) with a surname march. Have you followed up trying to access the Parish Records from the L.D.S. -- Presuming you know the religion, my Pattons (sp) were Presbyterian, have you tried writing to the parishes which are possibly concerned?
edited- Sorry, I should have said Donagh Co.Monaghan

Best wishes

Thanks for the responses.
Unfortunately I know nothing more about my relations than I have already posted ... family legend speaks of the marriage causing a rift in the family . John's wife whom he appeared to have met and married in Glasgow was also Irish (she came from County Monaghan) but \john and his family are mysteries and what I don't know about them is what I need to confirm or refute any of the possibles that are out there.
There are a few William Pattons listed in Griffiths and there are 2 who later signed the Ulster Covenant and there are several John Pattons whose fathers are called William in the Antrim area (but none with a mother Elizabeth).
Unfortunately as I am not even certain which county the family came from I am little further forward unless I start wading through the films county by county
