Re Gillans from Donegal
Hi Thomsos
IF these are your family, then William's 1855 BC might worth looking at (much more information in that year only).
(hopefully you'll know if these are "yours"!)

Re Gillans from Donegal
Hi Thomsos,
I think you may need some advice from the Irish experts on TS...!
as, sorry to say, i know next to nothing of records in Ireland.
A good read of all the Irish posts on TS may give an idea of what's available though.
Jack
ps, if William & Margaret died in Scotland, then their parents' names from their DCs
might help narrow down to what area in Ireland they might be from originally.
(but of course it might always have been Donegal!)
I do hope someone can steer you in the right direction.

Hi Thomsos, You may find the following webpage very handy. Scroll down and the parishes of Kilbarron and Inishmacsaint cover the town of Ballyshannon. (mostly Kilbarron).
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com ... lMain.html
At the top of each parish page , you will see the early church records starting dates.
A couple of questions though.(maybe a few
)
1. Why do you just 'think' Ballyshannon' for the 1846 marriage? Sometimes , I've had to go through all the childrens birth certs, to get (sometimes) a more precise location?
2. What are the birthplaces on the 1855 cert for the parents?
3. What religion were William and Margaret?
As Jack said, I think it would be best if you could find both Williams and Margarets death certs, which would give the 2 mothers maiden names(hopefully). It just might narrow it down. Also any census entries, which might give a more precise location.
I have looked in Griffiths Valuation for you, (although William has left by that time, hopefully some family with the name Gillan stayed behind).
There are a few family heads in Kilbarron Parish (in 2 townlands) and I think just one in Inishmacsaint).
There is a widow Gillan in the flax list of 1796, in Kilbarron.
It would be interesting to see if the mothers maiden names were close to or even neighbours of the entries for Gillan in G.V. and the Flax list. I can check that for you when you get them.
Though none of this will help you in terms of b.m.d's it does help to pinpoint their location, then to start looking for church records for the area. If you are very lucky and they did marry in 1846, and they were non-catholic, they SHOULD have a civil marriage entry, (if they did register it) which you could send for. You can also order the 1846 civil marriage index film at your local L.D.S. centre.
See link below and accompanying links on page.
http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/bro ... rds/state/
Griffiths Valuations is available on Irish Origins if anyone wants to do their own searches. The townland maps are mostly very good, and can usually pinpoint exact plots of land. (no townland maps for the north at this time)
p.s. I'm no Irish expert, just keep plodding along and learning a little on the way.

Thanks-
Thought I found William Gillan's dc -1879 age 48 st Rollox Glasgow which means he was born 1831
Wife - Margaret
father - Patrick
mother - Catherine Gallocher or Gallagher
but can't find any trace of a Margaret Gillan
but then on the 1871 census:
William Gillan age 47 which makes his birth date 1824
Margaret Gillan age 48 birth date 1823
William Gillan son age 16 - I have his bc born Glasgow 1955
so I think this is the right one
is it possible the age is wrong in the first one?
By the way there religion was RC

What age does it state for William snr on his son Williams birth cert in 1855? Anyway, sometimes ages are out on death certs and on census, for a variety of reasons. Informants may only have guessed ages.
But is this your Rose and Margaret in the 1881?

If it is, is this the same address as death cert (usual residence ) for William? Or does the address for Rose on her marriage cert match the death cert?
Who was informant on death cert?
back to ireland--
There is a Patrick Gillan in the Town of Bundoran,(townland Drunacrin, Parish of Inishmacsaint. Loads of Gallaghers in the Bundoran and Ballyshannon areas (abt 4 miles between towns).
So I think it's down to Catholic Parish records in this area, or even the Church of Ireland!!!!
Birthplaces for William and Margaret on 1855 B.C. and marriage place?
This is a nice wee site for Bundoran and links to Ballyshannon with a bit of history etc.

Managed to find this - I think this is my family-
William Gillan (born c.1825) married Margaret Gillan (born c.1823) in 1846 in Ballyshannon.
Between that time and 1855 they came over to Glasgow, Scotland, and settled in the Garngad/ St Rollox district.
William died 1879 and was son of Patrick Gillan and Ann Gallacher,
Margaret died 1890 and was daughter of Patrick Gillan and Margaret Byrne.
Their son William (1855-1928) married Catherine White 1874

There is only one entry for the surname Byrne(s),Burn(s) Barn(s).
i.e. Anne Byrne -The West Rock, Ballyshannon. (Townland of Carrickboy, Parish of Inishmacsaint) Now Anne was very neatly sandwiched between the R.C. Graveyard and the Infantry Barracks!! Do you think she was trying to tell us something
Did a search under Birne and came up with a Patrick Beirne, on the next page!! Townland of Portmason, but still town of Ballyshannon.
The only 2 entries in the 2 parishes, though the name is common elsewhere in Donegal.
