Hi there need some input.
i have a margaret bell born in 1800 in ayrshire and i know this is right as i have a copy of the OPR.
i then have an 1851 census which i think my margaret appears on but instead of being 50/51 on it her age is listed as 42? is it possible that this is the same person?
also in the 1841 census i have a child john mitchell who is staying with bell family members and after looking him up i found that his mother is margaret bell (i think the same one as mentioned above). but margaret is not in the same household and neither is a father for the child
so really what i need to find out is if the above mentioned margarets are all the same person

Hi Karen
I can't answer all your questions but I will say that the Margaret born in New Cumnock in 1800 with parent of James Bell and Jennet McCall and other siblings of Thomas, Jennet, Agness, James, maybe George, John and Andrew is the very same Margaret that is found in 1851 living in Old Cumnock with sister Agnes, brother Andrew, and an assortment of weans. No sign of your John Mitchell at this point though so I really wouldn't dare guess if this Margaret is his mom. I also can't find this Margaret in 1861 or either of the offspring she's sporting in 1851!! (Just what exactly is that surname anyhow????........maybe posting an image of the 1851 census could help get some answers on that!) The neice from the 1851 named Agnes belongs to her sister. When this Agnes marries she states that both her parents are dead. Oh...and brother Andrew marries in 1855 and his widow's death is easily found some years later a parish or two over with the informant being a son named John. I just can't help you with what happend to Margaret!!!! I thought it was going to be way too easy with a death of a 99 year old Margaret Bell in 1899 but if it is her the informant didn't know much about his ancestors.
How's that for stirring things up!!
Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean
well that stirs things up very nicely indeed! the other two childrens surnames on the 1851 census are lamont and farquhar. that gives me some things to go on at least and where i am the weather is bad with snow at the moment so as im not going anywhere ive got the whole afternoon for research!
Thanks,
Karen
