I am researching my sisters' Scottish roots and not doing to badly for a beginner - although I am having trouble deciphering some of the writing on the documents!!!! I am enjoying all this research, not just my sisters' but my own too- its rather addictive and to top it all what a friendly, helpful, nice bunch of people around these forums too
My sisters lineage is MCNIE, (She also knows that there is a MC Gregor clan tartan within the lineage) I have detailed what I have unearthed already :
Her father: Robert Donaldson McNie married to (our mum) HSM Herpe. Robert D born 1928 Auchenheath area, died approx 1968 Oxted Surrey.
His siblings are Ellen and Shelia.
Their parents: Robert Donaldson McNie born 22/11/1908 married - 23/5/1925 to Emma (Forrest) Hanney born 1906. This is where I encounter my first problem - is Forrest, Emmas' middle name of a double-barrelled surname? Emma parents are John and Helen ?Forrest? John was a coalminer.
Robert Donaldson father was Robert Donaldson 19/11/1870 married 1894 to Esther Davidson born 9/8/1870. RD born Tullianllian Perth and Ester Avoch,Ross and Cromarty. I don't have any siblings for any of these people - as yet.
RD parents were James and Jemima Clarrk married 1861.
James was a river pilot, and they were married in Tullianllian Perth., I have Kincardine as the places of birth. By the 1891 census Jemima was a widow.
Several of the Robert Donaldsons' worked on the railways in various capacities - is it possible to search the personnel records?
Esther parents were John and Jane Urquhart.
And this is as far as I've managed, before I start going too much further I would like to uncover, siblings, deaths etc.
If anyone can link to these details or provide other sources of information or even offer a bit of help to this beginner it would be very much appreciated.
Thanks.
Vicky
