Pigot's Directory Scotland 1825-26.....

Hi Folks

Does anyone have access to Pigot's Directory 1825-26 - either the combined one for all of Scotland or in particular the Highland Counties disc?

I am looking for an Alexander Allan - Innkeeper - possibly in Inverurie (page 194 on the Highlands Counties disc) or more generally in Aberdeenshire. I do not have much more on this man other than he was married to Mary Simpson. His occupation (deceased) was given on the death cert of his son James Allan (one of my brick walls)- who died in Inverurie in 1869.

Should you fnd yourself in Edinburgh I would think two places might be with trying (but you could phone first to find out for sure!): NAS who have some Glasgow Directories I know, so they may have others... and the Scottish Genealogy Society whose library is at Victoria Terrace, Edinburgh. They have a huge collection of books including directories etc, some on microfiche.

The only Alexander Allan I can see in Aberdeenshire is listed under "Tavern keepers, vintners and publicans" at 3 Trinity Street, Aberdeen.

If you've got a lot of tradesmen living at that period, I recommend you get a set of Pigot's Directories on CD from Archive CD Books. The full set of 5 CDs costs £35 and each individual CD costs £11.50. The link is http://www.rod-neep.co.uk/

Across the road from the National Library is the Edinburgh Central Library. I think its collection index is searchable. See TalkingScot's Libraries page - link above. It would most likely be in the Scottish Room - down two flights of stairs if you are visiting.
