Ross: From Forres, Coupar Angus, Dundee, Rafford and beyond.

Post by Liz Turner » Sun Mar 12, 2006 4:35 pm

I've only recently started tracking my mother's family back through her father's line (having looked at the maternal line) and have run into some difficulties.

My grandfather George Alexander Ross was born on 20/4/1905. His mother was Isbella Clelland (I've traced them back to her grandparents (Clelland/Chalmers in Denny and Henderson/Hotchkiss in Falkirk). His father was Henry James Gray Ross and the marriage took place on 2/7/1900 in the Cockburn Hotel, Bath Street, Glasgow.

Henry James Gray Ross was b 22/5/1871 at 40 Thorn Place, Dundee. I've also discovered that he had five siblings of whom we had no knowledge. Henry's parents were George Ross (joiner) b 5/7/1845 in Forres and Jessie Gray (domestic servant) born 1844. George and Jessie married in Coupar Angus on 24/6/1870.

George's parents were Donald Ross and Elizabeth Falconer - they married on 10/6/1826 in Forres. From Elizabeth's DC she died on 20/3/1872 at 8 ?Melvin's Wynd, Forres. Donald died on 12/8/1870 in Forres. Donald was a lime stone quarrier and in the 1861 Census was manager at Colehall Limeworks.

I'm now trying to find the parents of Elizabeth who, from her DC appear to be John Falconer and Elizabeth Falconer MS Ross! John appears to have been a ?Coimb Maker - whatever that is. In the 1871 Census Elizabeth appears (income from property and money) with one of her daughters, Alice (Alice was born in Elgin).

I'd also like to find the parents of Donald (died 12/8/1870 at 8 ?Wilson's Wynd, Forres) who, from the info on his DC, seem to have been Angus Ross, farmer, and Grace Ross MS Ross!

Grateful for any suggestions!

Hi Annette

Bit remiss of me not to include Donald's age! Donald was born 1801 and Elizabeth (Betsy) also b 1801. He died 1870 and she died 1872.

The Grace and Angus I am looking for were both dead before 1870. Sorry for the confusion.

It took me a while to work that out! Thanks for the suggestion though. The whole part of the country up there is new to me. All of my searches thus far have centred round Fife, Edinburgh and lowlands, and bits round Banchory-Devenick in the far northeast.

With a name like Ross it's only a matter of time until I end up in Ross-shire/Ross & Cromarty.

I've actually got another distant line of Ross in my family (they go back to a marriage in 1826), but other than 4 members of the family in St Cuthbert's Edinburgh, I've not done any other searching for them yet. I'm certain that they will be completely unconnected Rosses!!
