Help, I am new to this site. I have traced my family back to the early 1700's. The Deas family can be traced to Leslie in Fife back to a Robert Deas and Helen Inglis. They had five children in Leslie beginning in 1751. I have been unable to find a marriage certificate for these people. I can't find a birth certificate for Robert Deas either on the IGI LDS site. Where do I go from here. I have made contact with several Deas descendants from Leslie in Fife, but haven't managed to link our trees. I imagine that Leslie was a fairly small town back in the 1700's.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Wrighte
..and a warm welcome to Talking Scot
According to the Fife Death Index there are a LOT of Deas in the Leslie area - including a Robert Deas who died in 1790 and was buried in April of that year (OPR 444-3) but there is no further info on him there unfortunately, so he could have been any age.
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Wrighte
In 1756 the total number of people in the town of Leslie was 732, and those in the surrounding country side in the parish amounted to 364.
http://stat-acc-scot.edina.ac.uk/
If also states that "the register of baptisms is kept both innacurately and irregularly since 1732 when the secession began" ( secession- a split in the Scots church) Partly this is also said to be due to the cost of 10d to register a child which the poor and some others were not happy to pay.
I wonder if this suggests that the marriage registers were also not very well kept...?
Best wishes
Lesley

thank you for your prompt replies. I did not expect a response so soon. If I order an image from Scotlands People for a birth that took place in in the 1750's, will it contain any information other than the name of the child and parents? Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I should look next? I have come across the names posted during my "travels", but have been unable to connect with them.

Hello LesleyB,
732 people in Leslie in the 1700's! This is why I find it surprising that with the number of Deas families living there at the time, that there must be a connection somewhere. Perhaps we need to go further back to make the connection. With this many families and them all naming their children the same names, it must have been quite confusing to keep track of them all. Your comments re the succession , make sense and would explain the "missing" registrations.
