Well I have learned more about the geographical changes in Glasgow/Lanark over the past hour or so than I have in all my years.
I always loved geography at school but never paid much attention to or probably was never taught much about the Local Geography.
Anyway I am looking for the location of a Fatal Accident in 1888.Poor James Cooper aka Waddell was felled by the Jib of a crane falling onto him.He was a foreman Mason & the place on the RCE is what looks like Minyston Bridge-near to Dundyvan Rd-No3.He died 15 minutes later.
Have looked for the location but can't find it.
Also anybody know of any local papers which may have carried the story at the time?
Anybody guess at Minyston Bridge Coatbridge?.....

That was fairly easy -
2nd map I looked at
go to :
http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/to ... plans.html
click Coatbridge
square VII.12.14
Dundyvan street is slap in the middle
The Monkland Canal is running along the top and a timber yard is beside that. Bank street seems to be the street running alongside the canal.
An un-named bridege runs across the canal opposite Dundyvan Row.
looking at the next square north VII.12.9 gives a Merryston Street running down to the canal past the Iron works.
Dundyvan Road and Bank Street still exist in the Town of Coatbridge - though the canal is long gone!

Does that give a clearer picture for you ?

Thanks Wilma had a look & can only assume he was working either on the bridge or near to it & was carried to somebody's house where he died.
what a horrible way to go but pray he was senseless to it all.

Hi Nina don't expect too much I was at Register House recently & was looking at the Murder c 1970's of what I think is a family member.
This was a fairly gruesome murder but the cause of death was Asphixiation & Strangulation no other details just where/when the body was found.I presume there would be other records but as this was an unsolved one not available to the Public.

Joette,
I can't promise you a quick reply I'm afraid but if you send me some details of the relevant dates etc., I will have a look at the local newspaper archives for you. My Grandfather at one time had a barbers shop at or near the beginning of Dundyvan Road.
