Laird, Baxter, Todd, Drummond.....

Hi,
I am hoping someone can help me out. I live in Canada and I have done a lot of searching (and spent quite a few credits) on scotlandspeople.gov.uk. I'm stuck at my great-great-grandfather and grandmother who were James Laird and Ann Baxter married August 10, 1849. I'd like to find their birthdates and if possible their parents names. However, because I am unfamiliar with the counties/districts of Scotland, when I enter one of their names, quite a few will come up for different towns and I don't know which is which!!!
The general areas for my father's ancestry is Dundee/Broughty Ferry/Monifieth/Angus.
I am also looking for my grandfather's maternal grandparents. They were Charles Todd and Clementina Drummond married February 2, 1852 in Carmyllie??? I think I may have found Clementina's birthdate which was Feb.2, 1834 in the parish of Tannadice. I'm not sure on that one.
I'm new to all of this searching for ancestors and find it extremely interesting. But it can be confusing and frustrating as well.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you can find them on the 1851 census on Scotlands People that should give you the ages for James and Ann (if they were telling the truth!) and their places of birth. This should help you find the correct births. Also, if they died after 1855, their death entries should give their parents' names.

The IGI seems to have your couple married in October:

Hello - Welcome to Talking Scot

If you can find Ann Baxter / Laird's Death Cerificate [ after 1855] that should have her parent's names on it - and whether or not her husband was alive then.

You can search for her using both surnames - that helps narrow the field a lot.
A quick look shows that there are only 2 Ann Baxter /Lairds dying between 1855 & 1955.

Looking for them in the various census records can help too with ages and places of birth - though keep an open mind as ages change and the birth places can vary a little

A good map of Scotland will help familiarise you with places and distances etc

If you view the birth entry on SP it will give you their ages and places of birth.
