Alexander Davidson Glasgow and Newcastle-on-Tyne?.....

Post by tishgibbons » Sun Mar 19, 2006 1:15 pm

Hi Folks,

Some of you might remember my puzzling over a grave in Crathie which contained a Canadian soldier who died in France (don't ask if you don't!) - anyway, this led me to discover another ancestor called Joan Fisher LEYS whom I hadn't realised existed. I lost track of her again until I found a census where she is referred to as Johanna - using that name I found she married in 1885 in Aberdeen, one Alexander DAVIDSON a police constable u r given as Newcastle-on-Tyne on the marriage certificate. His parents are Alexander Davidson and Eliza Kinghorn. No sign of her again until her death in 1912 in Govan, Lanark, where she is the widow of Alexander Davidson, Spirit Merchant. Her son is the informant, one Alfred G Davidson and the address is again Newcastle-on-Tyne, 159 Bolingbroke St, Heaton.

I'm not sure where to go with this. I haven't found births of any children, not even Alfred - Is Alexander likely to have been English and could she have lived in Newcastle-on-Tyne and maybe just returned to Scotland after he died? Would someone from Newcastle-on-Tyne be likely to work as a policeman in Aberdeen in 1885? I don't suppose these questions have obvious answers but maybe someone out there would have an idea where to look.

Here is Johanna in 1881 with her neighbours.

I wonder if old Alexander died and young Alexander came up from Newcastle and met Johanna?

Tish,

If Alexander's usual residence was Newcastle I'd think he worked there as a policeman not in Aberdeen. They might have got married in Aberdeen and moved back to Newcastle. I'd try to find them on the 1891 census in Newcastle.

Could this be Alfred's birth?

Name: Alfred George Davidson
Year of Registration: 1886
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Newcastle Upon Tyne
County: Northumberland
Volume: 10b
Page: 158 (click to see others on page)

Bless You All!!!

Annette, this sounds daft but I never thought of him as being from 'home' if you know what I mean, though the Newcastle ties must also have been strong if Alfred is back there again by 1912.

Pinkshoes, you're an angel - yes that's definitely the right family. Looks like only the one child, Alfred G and no wonder I couldn't find his birth in Scotland.

Where's Jarrow by the way?

Ye've made Paddy's Weekend for me!

Hi Trish

Nelmit has already given you the 1881 census for Johanna and her nieghbours but how about his for Alexander.

Assume he came back to Scotland to marry his sweetheart and they returned to Newcastle.

Looks good to me Pinkshoes,

George was Johanna's father's name and the year looks about right for a boy who was 14 in 1901 census. I'm not good at searching the English records so I'm really grateful to you for your help.

Here's Jarrow info :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jarrow

Quite an important place :D - look for Jarrow marches stuff on google

I've not found Alfred's death - I suppose he would have died in Scotland if they went back there after father's death.

If you want to pm me your email address, copies of the stuff I've found will wing their way to you (she said confidently  )
