Sutherland family in Canterbury.....

Post by DiDi » Thu Mar 23, 2006 3:19 am

Hello all...this site recommended to me by a fellow GR member so here goes.

My g.grandmother Christina Sutherland was born 16 November, 1838, Dunbeath, Caithness & came to Lyttelton New Zealand in 1867 aboard the "Lincoln". A year later in June 1868 she married a farmer William McLauchlan born 1836, Dunkeld, Perthshire who had come with some of his family on the "Cornubia" to Lyttelton in 1855.

From Christina's death certificate I found her parents were William Sutherland & Christina Sutherland (Nee Sutherland) but don't know where or when they were born & married.

Christina Sutherland & William McLauchlan were married in the home of Mr Sutherland, Lincoln & a witness was a James Sutherland, farmer, Selwyn.
Can somebody plse help as I feel stumpted. :? Looking forward to using this great site. Di Di

Hi DiDi,

If you go to the IGI site you will find your family there.
Go to the SOURCES on the top of the Talking Scots page and follow the link to IGI .
A Parent check found William Sutherland and CHRISTIAN Sutherland in the area you are looking for.

Cheers,
Maureen

Thanks Marmot for your helpful prompt reply. Apparently there are two Christina Sutherland born 16 November 1838 in Dunbeath with parents of the same name. My Christina Sutherland died in Ashburton, New Zealand on January 19, 1912 & is buried in the Waterton cemetary with her husband William McLauchlan. The other Christina appears to have died much earlier at the age of 30yrs. I hope I'm not looking at the wrong thing because would dearly love to find her siblings. Please correct me if I've made a boo boo. I've soooo much to learn.
Cheers Didi

Hi all, Can anyone please connect with my Christina Sutherland. Her parents William Sutherland c. 1811 & Christina/Christian Sutherland formerly Sutherland may have been married in Latheron. Does Archibald Cook Sutherland have any significance? It would be so great to find either William or Christina's (mother's)families.
xing fingers. DiDi ps James Sutherland may be a brother or cousin.

Hi DiDi
Have you tried FreeCen to locate them in Latheron?

Its so small -even the whole parish - can be checked from household to household in 20 minutes.
Wick is only 10 miles or so up the road and there were umpteen Sutherlands there.
The only problem is that they all seemed to use a very small group of forenames and sorting them out can be a bit of a problem unless you have a note of the siblings.
Latheron is a lovely wee place.

Johnston, Reside, Lyle all over the place !

Watson, Morton, Anderson, Tawse, in Kilrenny
