Lost Brothers.....

Post by STUARTDALGLEISH » Mon Feb 21, 2005 6:31 pm

Hi all,

I'm having some trouble finding the deaths of two brothers.

Thomas Dowd b21.10.1872 Castle Street, Glasgow
Joseph Dowd b 04.07.1880 264 Garngadhill, Glasgow

Thomas seems to dissapear before getting to the 1881 census

Father Patrick 41
Mother Catherine 32
James 7
Ellen 5
Catherine 4
Joseph 9months

Thomas would have been 8 but seems to be missing. I have looked for Thomas Dowd 1872 - 1891 age 0 - 19 only 1 entry appears and he is 14 so it cant be him, also checked for Thomas Dowd (no age entered) 1872 - 1952, 13 hits but none tally up age wise, I've also had a look for Dodd, Dodds and Doud but nothing matching.

The same happens with Joseph,

He is on the 1881 census at 9months but when we get to the 1891 census, his father is down as Patrick 51
Catherine 15
Maria 9
Edward 7
but no Joseph and he should now be about 11.

Catherine the mother died in 1887 so he's not with her

Any clues would be appreciated.

Cheers

Stuart

Hi Stuart,

Just a thought.....you might want to try Industrial Schools. I had a 13 year old ancestor missing on the 1901 census, and I found him at an Industrial School.

Good luck.

My money's on the two young kids being with relations in Ireland.

Use the year of birth facility to search for a Joseph who may be the correct one, but, as you'll see, the situation is inconclusive although there's a Belfast link to follow up.

There is an exact age match for Joseph in Glasgow in the 1891 census, but no image !

Hello Stuart,

bearing in mind the connection with South Shields from 2 years ago (that most TS readers could not know), there is a death on FreeBMD in Sep 1874 in South Shields of Thomas Dowd, aged 1.

I have not yet found any clue to Joseph's whereabouts.

John

Hello Stuart,

there is a 1954 death of Joseph Dowd, aged 75, in Townhead Glasgow. Unfortunately, the informant, Robert McCrory, nephew-in-law of Belfast, did not know the parents' names. However, there is an RCE for this record but who knows what it may contain since it was not apparently a suspicious death.

John

John,

Just a follow up from the South Shields find, after we had found all the weans it turns out the name change between Dowds and Dodds is very much an accent thing between Glasgow/Scotland and Newcastle:-

Thomas Dowd born Glasgow 1872-?
Ellen Dodds born South Shields 1875-1901
Catherine Dodds born South Shields 1876-1963
James Dodds born South Shields 1974-1885
Patrick Dowd born Glasgow 1879-1880
Joseph Dowd born Glasgow 1880-?
Marie Dowds born Irvine 1882-?
Edward Dowds born Irvine 1884-1894

So, when in England they were Dodds but up here they are Dowds.

Cheers

Stuart

John,

Just rearranged the birth order and they would have been down around that area in 1974 as James was born in the February.

Ina

Where do I start with the Industrial Schools?

Thanks

Stuart

MMMM,

I did find a Thomas Dowd in the 1901 census in Tunstall aged 25 (3 years to young) but he was married to an Annie and had a daughter Catherine, funny thing being my Thomas' mother was called Catherine and this Thomas is a Brickyard Labourer (matches the 1954 death occupation)

Hello Stuart,

there was a Thomas Dowd born in 1875 in Calton Lanarkshire, and he is possibly the person in the Potteries for the 1901 census.

Not a betting chap, but my money would be on the South Shields death.

John

Hi John,

I'm going to get the south shields cert, as you say it looks quite good. I've spent a bomb already looking for him so what's another £7.

Thanks

Stuart
