Interesting.....

Post by Alice Bradford » Sat Mar 25, 2006 10:45 pm

I was at the FHC searching the film of Old Monkland PR and I'm now at 1786. I thought this entry was interesting. "June 5 William and Anne Twins to William Brown Secret Work man in Mary's Towne" Now just how secret can he be if he has it recorded in the Parish Register?

Now there are columns and the one for witnesses often contains "con". What does that mean?

Hi Alice,
Oddly enough just the other day when looking at a census for one of our TS members,
i came across this man in Calton, Glasgow 1861.
--
Donald McDonald, boarder, u/m 30, labourer in secret works, b Uist.

Like yourself, i was thinking - not much of a secret now.
Jack
ps, not too sure what "con" means - was this with witness names, or only when no witnesses?
Or no pattern at all?

Hi Alice

My guess would be "Congregation ", as in - those who gang tae the kirk!
e.g.
1778 27th April, Kettle, Fife
Balingall, Tenant. Was born Robert son to Thomas Balingall & Janet Gulen his wife and was baptised the 11th May witness the congregation.

Best wishes
Lesley

Sounds like a lazy minister or session clerk, - "Con" in this context is shorthand for "in the presence of the Congregation", as witnesses.
