Hi Watty

A warm welcome to Talking Scot.

I had a look at the Scotland's People Site.

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Could find no birth of a William Barnes in the whole of Roxburghshire from 1890 to 1900. I tried putting in just the name Barnes with no given name and got one hit for the town of Hawick itself.

There are however 10 hits for Barnes (no given name) births between 1890 and 1900, perhaps siblings. Barnes isn't a common name in that part of the world. Have no credits left so can't view them.

Perhaps you would like to go to the Scotlan'd People Site and look for yourself. A birth certificate will give you his parents names.

Best wishes

You should be able to find your grandfather on the 1901 census in either England or Scotland.

I gather you have looked at the England one on http://www.1901censusonline.com/ or somewhere similar.
Without any results.

To look for him in Scotland in 1901 you will have to go to Scotland's People [ link at top of this page] that's the Offical Records Office for Scotland. It's basaed on a pay per view method of payment.

If you find him there, you can then look on the same site for his birth and as that will give his parent's names and perhaps marriage details , you can then go on back from there [ assuming that they are Scots as family legend would have it].

One factor to remember is that Barnes could also be spelled Barns.

If you find any problems in using that site, do get back to us and we'll try and help you navigate it.

No, I'm afraid not, - you have to register online at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk , then buy credits in multiples of 30/£6.

Hazel

Was about to go and have my breakfast but thought that I'd have a "quick" look at this situation.

The probable family is very easy to find in the 1901 census, as is the birth register entry for the 6 year old son William, except that this matching birth record shows him as illegitimate !!, which is a wee bit confusing to begin with until a wee bit of digging shows that the parents of this "Son" William were married quite young.

This is the same family in the 1881 census..

Dwelling: Faughhill
Census Place: Bowden, Roxburgh, Scotland

Marr Age Sex Birthplace
John BARNES M 26 M Morebattle, Roxburgh, Scotland

Occ: Ag Lab
Jemima N. BARNES M 25 F Lauder, Berwick, Scotland
Rel: Wife
Hellen H. BARNES 7 F Wilton, Roxburgh, Scotland
Rel: Daur
Occ: Scholar
Margaret BARNES 5 F St Boswells, Roxburgh, Scotland
Rel: Daur
Robert N. BARNES 1 M Bowden, Roxburgh, Scotland
Rel: Son

By 1901 the then 25 year old Margaret is off working away from home. Were I a betting man I'd put a large amount of money on wee William being more correctly described as the grandson of the couple shown in the 1901 census and above.

Lauder, Berwickshire, is some distance north of Hawick, but the father was a ploughman at marriage (nae bad for 19!), who moved around a bit, and had graduated to "Steward", - I'd imagine that this is the equivalent of the Mearns "grieve" in 1901. At the time of their marriage, he was living in the parish of Bowden, his bride in the parish of Wilton, which borders Hawick parish to the north.

Now off for my breakfast !!
