Trying to trace ancestors Morrison and Ingram .....
Hi there I'm new to this and i'm not sure quite how to start. I am trying to trace William Morrison who I have found on the census of 1871 as living in Paisley with his wife Rebecca and daughters Caterine,Mary Jane, and Rebecca. they were all born in Ireland but I dont know where! Also Robert Ingram and his wife Mary and son John who incidentally married Rebecca so I assume they came from the same area ??What and where do I look ?? any help would be appreciated

Hi Aileen,
A warm welcome to TalkingScot! I hope someone with some Irish Surname expertise can help....
I dare say you'll have these censuses etc, and it's a pity (only from a family history point of view!),
that none of William MORRISON & wife Rebecca's children were born in Scotland.
But some of the INGRAMs were - so a look at their BCs should say when & where Robert INGRAM & Mary PATON got married.
No guarantee though it was the same area where William & Rebecca were married.
--
Rebecca was a widow by 1881 so a look for hubby William's DC will hopefully give his parents.
(and Rebecca's maiden name may also help in identifying where she came from in Ireland)
William was alive in 1871, and it's a good chance that he died in Paisley between then & 1881.

Thanks for uour response Jack. i'm really impressed. How did you find out all that so quickly? I've been using scotlandspeople and I worked back from my father's mother and father to that point but have arrived at a block with where to search now for the Ireland connection. At the moment I have started looking at my mother's side which is Love also from Paisley. If you have any advice on how to proceed I would be pleased to hear it !! Thanks again for all your help!

With the info that you have then you can at least find out the names of the parents of William MORRISON and Rebecca JONES through their death register entries.
It looks like William died between 1871 and 1881 so restrict the search to that range of years. It's most likely that he was of around the same age as his wife so put in a year of birth of 1830 and set the range to +/- 5, and then restrict the search to Renfrewshire, and Bingo
there's only two hits, so even if you choose the wrong one first that's only 11 credits.
You now have Rebecca's maiden name (see above), and a choice for her death record. Either use the cross check search using both surnames, and just put in "R" for her given name, - 1 hit which is her; or search for Rebecca MORRISON and assume that she remained in Paisley and restrict the search to Renfrewshire and use the same technique of setting the year of birth to 1830 with the range set to +/- 5, and the period 1881 onwards, - the result is again 1 hit. Had the county not been specified then there's 3 hits in all of Scotland, with the obvious one in Paisley. In either case 6 credits, total 12 or 17 for the pair, and you're fortunate that the informants had the info on the parents in both cases (except that I don't know if I believe the maiden name of Rebecca's mother, - her daughter, the informant, has it the same as her paternal granny's surname, - not impossible, but ........).
It's always worthwhile looking at every possible census in this type of situation, as there can occasionally be a little bit more info on place of birth in one census compared to the others, - but not in this situation as there's no trace in 1861, and they both died before 1891, but then there's the children ........ I can't find Catherine anywhere obvious, and it's not because she's married, that happened in 1892 - did she marry a cousin

While you don't yet have a location at least you have the names of the parents. IGI doesn't appear to help. Unfortunately, registration of births didn't start in Ireland until 1864 so the kids were just before that.
One hint you have is the church involved in Catherine's marriage, - you need to check the other daughter's as well. - as it was normal for the marriage to take place according to the forms of the church to which the bride belonged .......
Good hunting

Forgot to add earlier that there's a chance of a Poor Relief application, - the inspector's report can sometimes give the exact place of birth in Ireland!
