Hi Katie

Sorry you've had to wait for so long for a response to your post. No parents on the death certificate makes it a difficult one.

One or two questions, the answers to which may help. Though I am perhaps clutching at straws!

- What was Elspeth's age on her death certificate? That would give us an age range
- Who was the informant? A close family member or not?
- Have you found Elspeth, Thomas and the children on the 1851 or 1861 Census. That could give us a place of birth.
- What are Elspeth's children's names. That could perhaps give a clue as to her parents' names.

Kind regards

Catriona

Don't forget name variants, Elspeth is interchangeable with Elizabeth and all its forms. Also Kay maybe from Mackay or variants such as Key, Cay etc.

Dear Katie,

I've got an Elizabeth Key in my family (I've found that Kay and Key can be interchanged!!!), but sad to say she's not your one. Mine was married in 1825 in St Andrew's and St Leonard's, Fife to John Balsillie. But I did have some credits left to use on SP and found this birth. Could she be yours given that your one died aged 66 in 1866?

20/10/1799 KEY ELSPETH JOHN KEY/JEAN LOCH FR 746 F NEWTON 696/00 0003

Hope this might be of help to you.

Liz

SORRY IT TOOK SO LONG TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS ABOUT ELSPETH KAY. SHE DIED IN 1866 ON THE 3RD OF FEB IN LARGO FIFE, HER AGE WAS DOWN AS 66, ON THE 1851 CENSUS IT SAYS THAT SHE WAS BORN IN RATHO, SHE MARRIED THOMAS COCKBURN IN RATHO IN 1820. SHE HAD 8 KIDS THEIR NAMES ARE DAVID, JOHN, MARGARET, JANE, ALEXANDER, THOMAS, JOSEPH AND JAMES. HER DEATH CERT IS VERY HARD TO READ BUT IT LOOKS LIKE HER SON ALEXANDER COCKBURN SIGNED THE DEATH CERT. THANKS AGAIN KATIE
