Maxwells pub Laurieston.....
Someone has given me info regarding a pub known locally as Maxwells in Laurieston nr Falkirk. Unfortunately this is not the real name. Anyone around remember anything about this place. Dont think it has been there for the last 30 years, but someone a wee bit more mature may remember something? I have been given the name Annie to go on, but seeing as she must have died after the records, I will need to get to Edinburgh to look and this is just not possible just now. Long shot I know, but I have noticed a few names from the Falkirk and Stirlingshire areas and thought it worth asking!
Cheers

Hello Laineywoo
Hubby's just been talking to his Aunt, who used to run a shop just along from Maxwells. She can't remember the real name of the pub. The lady called Annie was the owner, though she can't remember her surname. She's sure she lived in Bainsford. This would have been in the late 40s early 50s. Her shop was at number 79 Mary Street and the pub was "two doors along". This is near Laurieston Cross as you turn off to Brightons. The pub was definitely still there in the late 70's when we lived near there.
Not much help, but at least its confirmed the name Annie and given a clue about where she lived.
Would Callendar House not have trade directories?
Best wishes

One pub that I can picture there is The Tam Bain. That was there, on the left if you were travelling eastwards (from Falkirk towards Linlithgow). I remember it there into the 1990s. Looks like it is still there - plenty of hits if you search on Google.
Added later: http://pubsulike.co.uk/newps/Falkirk/Fa ... Laurieston also gives Lawries Bar in Mary Street on even number, so presumably on the other side of the road.
All the best,
AndrewP

Hi Pinkshoes
This is great thank you! I will def try Callendar House about this. I think this must have been about where the Co-Op stands today or there abouts but not the Tam Bain pub as I was beginning to wonder! Although I come from around that area originally, I cant remember it ever having been there, must be too young!! Now that I know that it did actually exisit! and a rough idea of where it was, I should have a good chance of finding something.........maybe even the Falkirk Heralds.
Thanks very much, I didnt think I would even get one answer to this post, you have absolutely stunned me.
I will let you know how I get on.....dont think Callendar House is open on a Sunday? If not probably Tues before I can get there

Hi Lainey
You might be in luck with Callendar House - says they open on Sundays from April to October - but maybe phone to check the research bit is open.

I have an old book " Brightons and The Surrounding Areas - from Pit to Pulpit " - by Denis R. Dishington.
In it there is a section on Laurieston and a very long poem in 3 parts about the village by Mr D. M. Crowe in 1955
It starts as a poem about "Tam Bain" and then was peruaded to write more and include more of the Local Characters.
At the end of the first section is :
'Old Tom Gregor he minds Weel
The wee shop owned by Annie Neill
Her Ice cream never failed to please.
Likewise her tasty plates o' peas.'
In the 3rd section he mentions Maxwells.
'The Maxwells lived above the store,
And the Arnotts, just next door,
The Livingstones along the street,
Nicer folks you couldn't meet.'
then much futher on...
Maxwell's sand hole was quite near,
A place that some young ones did fear,
Old Dalgleish well known to all,
At work was buried by a fall.
Now we visit Maxwell's pub,
To meet the local curling club,
They would leave us in a trice,
If on the pond there was some ice."
I hope this helps to fill in a few more gaps, at least you have a book name to ask for at Callender House - I'm not certain though if they have it.
If you want any more of it [I refuse to type the full 60 odd verses.........] drop me a PM

I think I actually have that somewhere! I just never thought or made a connection! Thanks very much, will now have to go and have a rake......could also be in the dreaded loft, you have to be v brave to venture there lol. Originally, I'm from Wallacestone, and my husbands from Polmont, I just cant believe neither of us can think what this place used to look like! We have now, begun to believe the pub was where Lawries is now. I know that was redone early to mid 80's but we cant think what it was like before!
We are v ashamed of ourselves, strange neither of us had even heard of it! We are trying to think of all the folks who MUST remember it, but I am def going up to C House tomorrow........Will keep you posted, and thanks again
