William Brown, Cabinet maker, Glasgow.....

Post by Pat Bostock » Mon Apr 10, 2006 10:17 am

Hi,

I wonder whether anyone is researching William Brown, Glasgow, who married Janet Cargin, in Lanark, in 1853.

They had 3 children I know of:

Regent Place, U.P. Church, Blackfriars.

Margaret Ferguson Brown: born 21 Oct. 1852.
William Brown: born: 21 Sept. 1854. Barony.
& a John Brown was the informant on Janet Brown's death - (son).

Janet Brown (nee Cargin) died in 1908 in Glasgow.

Also, can anyone tell me what does U.P. Church mean?

Thanks.
Pat Bostock.

Hi Pat,
I'm not sure if you have these other children by now. They are mainly from the IGI (International Genealogical Index).
You do get the feeling there should've been a child born in 1856; but maybe Janet had some birth problems in that year.
(all 10 children have William BROWN as father, and the first 3 have mother as Janet CARGIN; on the other 7 it's McCARGIN)

Brown can be a rather difficult name to search, especially so with those popular forenames!
(you can only hope that those who do have middle names have them on their MCs or DCs)

Hullo,

Thank you so much for the information about William Brown's family - I am very impressed with your knowledge. I have tried to find something about the Browns for years, but with limited success.

You have put me forward with my research enormously.

Sincerely,
Pat Bostock.

Hi Pat,
Some earlier censuses - it would seem wee Matthew born 1858 has probably died young.
But plenty of his siblings for you to trace...

William Brown & Family.

Post by Pat Bostock » Sat Apr 22, 2006 5:27 am

Hi Jack,

Once again, thank you so very much for your great help.

Janet Cargin, William Brown's wife, was my gt. grandfather's only sister, he was James Ferguson Cargin & left Scotland in 1850, joining the Hon. East India Co.'s army & being stationed in Agra. He was in the Indian Mutiny, & named his 1st daughter Janet - unfortunately 3 of his first 4 babies died young, and later he named another daughter Janet.

So it was a wonderful result, especially as I can now take all this wonderful information to show my mother, who is 91 & so very interested in her family tree.

Sincerely,
Pat Bostock.

William Brown married to Janet Cargin.

Post by Pat Bostock » Sun Apr 23, 2006 2:14 pm

Hi,

Just thought I would add that one of their children is named Agnes Marshall Brown. Janet Cargin's father, Matthew Cargin, married for a second time to Agnes Marshall in Glasgow & then they went to Victoria, Australia.

Margaret Ferguson Brown is named after Janet Cargin's mother (1st marriage).

The second names are great clues.

Kind regards,
Pat Bostock.
