Hi Heather,

Seems a tough one here, but it could read :-

Husband is in Prison or Husband is in Poorhouse

A M Owing could be the name of the Enumerator.

Loks to me that it says husband in prison A M owing

Could that mean Aliment money owing or something like that?

Hi Heather

I agree with John
'Husband is in Poorhs'. The upper margin entry appears to say something about 'Charity' too.

There isn't enough from the rest of the writing to confirm whether this is his usual way of writing a lower-case 'h'

A.M. Owing could be the enumerators name as suggested but a look at the district pages would be needed to check that out.

Hello everyone

I have scanned the rest of the census and it is on the gallery unthe title of 'the rest of the census'. It is from 1841 census for England. Hope this helps.

Bother!!

There are only two other lower case 'h's in the whole page and neither looks like like it might match.
His 'T's look like J and his 'R' looks like a K without the extra flourish.

I'm stumped - I hate to admit. :(
Even my previous comment about the upper notation 'Charity' appears to be part of an address - not a marginal note.

I would sleep on this one but its not anywhere near bedtime :D

Anyone else got any ideas???

Russell
P.S. The full page certainly makes comparisons easier.

I agree with all the interpretations but as that doesn't seem to be getting us anywhere I looked at it trying to see any long shots. I notice he does have gaps between letters in words so I wondered if the word after husband might begin with s and be part of next word and could mowing be morning. Could that take us anywhere? I still think the idea of husband in poorhouse best bet so far though.

What a toughie!!
My only contribution at the moment is I think what looks like an 'a' is really &.

So - husband is ??
& on (or) m o(u)rning.

I also think there is an outside chance that the 'o' in the last word could be p.

Looking at the family name is it Thomson ?
If so this may be Hubby !

On the 1841 freeCen site there is a John Thompson aged 40 born IRELAND in BODMIN JAIL
Type in PRISONER for Occupation.

Or could the word be a-mooring? As on a boat moored at shore somewhere?
