Was wondering if anyone could help me date this family photo. I thought this could be my gg grandparents in the front row, John and Susan (Muir) McCracken, but John died in 1873, do you think this picture is from that era, it looks to me that he has white hair, but then the rest of the family don't jive

GG grandfather was about 12yrs older than his wife.

Hi Linda
I have photos of my grandparents, taken before their marriage when they were in their early twenties. That situates the photos around 1890-1895. She was wearing a highnecked dress with a brooch at her throat and a fitted bodice, similar to your ladies. He was wearing a collar with the corners turned back, like the older man in the picture and his young son.
Don't know if that helps you.
Regards
Catriona

Hi Catriona, J Cook advertised in Paisley and Kilmarnock from 1898 to 1900, so I figured middle 1890's to 1900. Now the fellow in the front with grey hair has now become a big mystery! Oh, how I wish pictures could talk

I was also looking at the mens ties and shirt collars, and the younger boys with bowties .....I think you are dead on with this being taken around 1895, give or take a few years.
Moral of the story ....... always write on the back of pictures of who is who

Linda

I've been promising to do that for years!!!!
If this is your gggrandmother in the picture, and it appears to be too late a photo to be your gggrandfather, any chance that she could have married again?

Hi Nina, John McCracken's father was William McCracken who married Jean McCulloch in Inch, Wigtown, 1814. William was born in Ireland, any connection

Catrina, I thought that this was my great great grandparents, but John died in Kilmarnock, 1873 and wife, Susan, died 1897, Burnfoot Rows, New Cumnock, I do not believe she remarried, have her as a widow in the 1881 and 1891 census, her death certificate states, John McCracken as her deceased husband ........ but you never know

I will have to study this picture some more and try to fit who is who around the late 1890's .......
Thanks Catriona for your suggestions

Linda

Rats, no real connection I can see Linda. My John's parent's are John McCracken and Mary McEwan, both born Ireland. John senior was born in Dublin according to the 1871 census. Younger John was born in Glasgow, but other siblings were born in Edinburgh. Oh well...thanks for the reply.
