Hi;)

If you are born in Scotland then move to Canada and become a Canadian citizen, can you still apply for a UK passport?

Hi Dennis,

See if you can find the applicable paragraph on the Passport Office's website.

All the best,

Dennis,

Not sure about Canada, but in the USA you have dual citizenship.

Hi :)

Found this

I had my UK passport in 1970, became a Canadian citizen in 1971, still have my expired UK passport ( never did get a Canadian passport ); so does the above link permit me to get my UK passport?

Dennis,

In the states when you become a citizen, if you do not have dual citizenship they take your passport and cut the corner off it, thus forcing you to buy a new American passport when needed. If you have dual citizenship they hand you back your passport intact (as they did with me).

If I were you I'd try to renew my British passport (assuming that's what you want). All they can do is say no, then you could apply for a Canadian passport.

Dennis:

Yes you can. You don't even have to be born in the UK as long as your father was. I was born in Canada and have a UK passport (now a European Community passport) because my father was born in the UK (Glasgow).

Yes Dennis you can have both passports in Canada or Uk however the dual citizenship in USA will soon be a thing of the past. Those who have it shouldn't have a problem however they have been cracking down for quite some time and more so since 9/11 and they prefer USA only now.

I was born in Scotland came to the U.S. in 1960 and became a citizen in 1967. It never came up about dual citizenship, that I can remember, the first I heard of it was a discussion on another board. I still have my UK passport (intact) but of course way out of date. I use a US passport, never thought about using the other. Interesting information about the changes coming up in U.S. law though.
